Just recently my mouse has started hanging up intermittently after a given time period.. usually like 1-2 minutes fine, then 2-5 second hang, then works .. etc etc

I had this happen a long time ago and believe it was a virus problem (trojan I think) but I have run 7 different virus and spyware checkers and nary a hit.
There doesn't seem to be any alert on on the net re a new virus either.
Can something else be causing this extremely annoying and debilitating occurrence. I can't do anything productive as it stands now *heavy sigh*

    TIA for any pointers.

Have you cleaned the mouse? Tried another mouse?

Run Task Manager and see if there is some unusually high processor activity during the time which the mouse is unresponsive.

Also check to see if it does that in Safe Mode too.

Turns out it is the mouse. Although it seemed to take longer, it started doing the same thing on another PC while another mouse worked fine on this one. Odd that it took a while before it started acting up on the other PC tho. What would cause that? Is it just electronically failing or might it be something else?

Re: cleaning it, I always keep the rollers etc clean on the inside (can tell when it needs it when it starts being bumpy in movement). Besides taking it into the tub with my rubber ducky, not sure what else I could do :p

I was just working on my neighbor's computer and his mouse was doing the same thing.

I opened the bottom and looked at the roller that the ball contacts and found a glob of something in one place that caused the cursor to stop moving when the ball contacted that point. Alcohol would not phase it. Had to scrape it off with my pocket knife. Evidently the ball had picked up something and applied it to the roller where it dried.

I would recommend you get a thumb roller mouse and once you get used to it ( a few dozen solitaire games) you'll never go back to the old style.
