How to remove icon from task bar?

    I had 2 Network icons on the left near the clock. One was with a red X see below. How do I get rid of the one with the X?

    The one with the red X through it is more than likely your hard wired ethernet jack. It will always show with the red X until you plug a cat5 cable into it or disable it under network connections. If you don't use it, disable it.
    I'm pretty sure that even with the checkbox unchecked that says show icon (in tcp/ip properties) that it'll show unless you disable it all together.

    It was disabled and the box does not have a check mark. I had done those prior to asking the question.

    Rt click Network Places on Desktop and select Properties. Rt click any of the following...
    1394 Connection
    Local Area Connection
    Wireless Network Connection...
    and select Properties. For all connections shown that are being used, remove the checkmark for "Show icon in notification areas when connected" and the icon goes away for good. To get rid of an icon for a connection that is not or never used, the device must be disabled. It can be disabled by rt clicking the connection in Network Places Propwrties or via Device Manager.

    I believe the icon will go away only if you have the cat5 cable plugged in.

    I think I read from the above reply that they have already tried both what I suggested and what you suggested...

    I'm at a loss.

    If the Network Adapter/Properties in Device manager is set to "Do not use this device (disable)" then the icon will never appear. This is different than disabling the Network Connection in My Network Places/Properties. The first disables the device entirely and the latter ONLY disables the connection associated with the device.

    You can usually just right click the task bar, after it's unlocked, and then hit customize and tell it to hide that one always, when innactive, or never......

    There is only 1 Rj45 and 1 1394, the third connection must be on the mother board. I have cat 5 in the RJ45.

    That did it!! I had the network disabled from Network Connections properties not the Device manager.
