Not 100% sure what you're asking but I'll give it a shot. If you join an XP Pro workstation to an NT 4.0 domain, XP cannot also be in workgroup mode. This goes for NT workstation, Windows 2000 Pro and XP Pro. It is an "either or" situation, you have to choose if your going to participate in a workgroup or domain.

A workgroup is simply a peer-to-peer network with no "dedicated" servers performing network-wide authentication. You can have servers in a workgroup to host applications and file/print services but there is no central point of login authenication that can be used for network resources.

A domain is a network in which you have domain controllers that authenticate user and computers accounts across the network. These domain controllers (DC's) are the "backbone" of the network providing a central point in the security infrastructure. There are more features to it but this is it in a nutshell.
