After searching for a present I find I do not know how to delete the search history and risk being discovered.

The search bar of Firefox has a "Delete History" Button, but how do I dispose of the drop down history in the main Google Window?

I read your post twice, and I have no idea what you want. Where is this Google dropdown? Do you have the Googlebar? Since I have Firefox, and I see a Search box more than bar, and no delete History associated with it, you will have to be more specific.

    No Googlebar.

Just open a main window on www.google.co.uk (or com) and a box shows where you may enter the search string. This box will remember the history and will make suggestions on a part entered string.

Where is this history saved, and how is it deleted?

Not sure, if it is just the the website. This Google link has information pertaining to the toolbar .
But the idea should be the same with the website.

    Labarum,

The Search History is stored in the history.dat file. I used the UK google link, and did search for pearls, went to 3 web sites. The websites were listed in the history.dat file. Delete the file, and the search history is gone.

    Labarum,

Shows up in my Firefox's history.dat file? Scroll to the last entries in the file, for the most current searches.

I am puzzled by the dropdown history, however. I have no dropdown history in the Google Search Toolbar?

    I do to

    http://www.google.co.uk/

and double click in the search box and a drop down history appears with scroll bar.

I have deleted history.dat and it is still there.

    Greetings,

I have no clue where the search history is stored, if in fact it is stored locally.
It may be at the Google site for all I know....

It looks like INDIVIDUAL search entries can be cleared by the following:

Highlight the entry ( Mouse over) DO NOT CLICK SELECT OR ENTER

With the entry highlighted, press shift+delete ( shift and delete at the same time)

I can not say anything about scrollbars as I do not have that many entries ( that I know of- don't use FF much)

    HTH

    regards:captjlddavis

I came up with this after doing a Search for delete Google History.
    Labarum,
Ok. I think I got it. If I select Go|History, I get the history for the day in a sidebar. And, I get the History for the specific sites. It is very easily deleted from Mozilla, I highlight the entire Google.com, which has four entry, right click|delete. It is done the same way in Firefox. At least my selected history item is deleted.

I don't think that works, at least it does not work for me. Neither does deleting the history.dat file. I am really starting to think it is on the google server.

The only place I can get the drop list that is mentioned is when in the first tab of a multi tab window.

    Very strange indeed.
I am running XP sp1 and FF 1.0

    Ok,

    Did some more digging.......

Google Search history is stored in the:
    C:\Documents and Settings\user\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile_name>\formhistory.dat

I believe that ALL form fill data is also stored there.

    Selected from:
    Tools|Options|Privacy|Saved form Information

You can Clear Form Data from this screen - But I think it will clear ALL your form fill data ( if you have any).

I do not think you can MANUALLY edit this file.....

De selecting Save Information will suspend the feature.

Shift+delete as I said above will selectively delete Items......

It is still a learning experience for me.....

    regards:captjlddavis

    Shift Delete works.

Holding down the keys while they auto repeat deletes the complete history.

This works in the main URL box in Firefox too.

Whatever I said above works for me. I will say it again because I don't think that anyone tried it. I did.
This works, at least, in Mozilla1.7.5 and FF1.0.
What can I do if you don't try it? Did the process open a sidebar? It does for me, I can select individual item, or the entire Google search, and delete it.
If it does not work what am I seeing? Or actually not seeing any more.
    I give up.

    Westside,

I just tried your method and although you can delete the Search items in the sidebar, it doesn't delete them from the drop down menu, when you double click the Search field. Therefore Labarum's surprise might very well be discovered... :(

Something else I discovered by following captjlddavis' instructions: once I enabled the option to save information entered in the Search field, if all searches in the dropdown entry of the Search field are removed, then the formhistory.dat file no longer exists.

    Ramona

    EDIT:
To clarify the last paragraph. The formhistory.dat file no longers exists if you don't use the Form Fill, and I don't. However, if you do, then that file remains in the salted folder.

    Ramona,
I may have a problem because I have no idea of what kind od drop down menu we are talking about. The Google site has no dropdown. If it is the Google toolbar, it is a different story. I don't have such toolbar.

    Westside,

I didn't have the dropdown menu in the Search field either, until I read the post by captjlddavis. He gave this setting: Tools|Options|Privacy|Saved form Information. Once I enabled the setting, I then had the dropdown menu, after I made several searches. It isn't the Google Toolbar, but the default Search feature, for which I use the Google Search Engine.

I have had the setting all along, and I have no idea where I would get a drop down which is described. Not in the Search page, for sure. I tried other Search engines, available from the only drop-down I see, and there is nothing.
Is this to the right of the search bar, analogous to Location bar?

    Westside,

If you have enabled: Save information I enter in web page forms and the Search bar

    Open Google
    Double click the Blank Field
If you have made searches, a drop down menu will appear
If you have made no searches, then make a few, then double click the blank field
