Have you looked in the settings for the Advanced system optimizer program?

One of the tools included in the application you mentioned does have the ability to bend fold and mutilate the taskbar and application icons:
    http://www.systweak.com/asov2/taskss.asp

Are you sure you have fully explored the options you have set for this? Before trying to change things back via the registry, explore and use the options in this tweaker you have used. It may have made modifications by using it's own defaults. You risk snowballing any problems you have by confusing or causing further unsycronizations between the registry and this tool (differences between what this tool says your option settings are and what the registry hkey values actually are). If problems are snowballed, this is not a particularly large large problem beyond the major nuisance it will cause you. You may find yourself having to track down any changes made to the registry.

Having said all the above and hoping you will take that advice or at least explore that avenue of reversing your taskbar and "running tasks icons" behavioral changes before seeking other methods, here is a couple of others:
    http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/taskbarplus!.htm

Registry keys can be found in the resource links below:
    http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=xp+taskbar+registry

But before doing any of the above the most important thing to keep in mind is; before you modify the registry, make sure you back it up either "in total, meaning the whole thing" or export the hkeys envolved prior to the change. Also make sure you understand how to restore the registry if a problem occurs. For information about how to back up, restore, and edit the registry, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft. Knowledge Base:
