    OK,

I can't figure this one out. Ever since I installed Windows XP SP2 on my PC's, in Internet Explorer when visiting certain web sites I get a series of 'boinking' sounds that is highly annoying.

This happens on my two home PC's, my work laptop and my co-workers laptop. We turn the sound off to keep from hearing it.

I have checked all IE settings I can find. I disabled the IE pop-up blocker becuase I figured it was an audible notice that IE was blocking pop-ups.

I run Avast! Anti-Virus on my home PCs and Norton on the work machines. I also run PestPatrol to eliminate any AdWare/SpyWare. At the moment all machines come up clean, but the wierd 'boinking' noise persists while Web browsing.

Has anyone else encountered this sound, and if so, how did you get rid of it?

Post a couple of the links that 'boink' at you and we can try to figure out what is going on.

Try: Select Start > Control Panel > Sounds, Speech and Audio Devices, Click Change the sound scheme and under Windows Explorer set Complete Navigation & Start Navigation to (None)

Do you have any cookie blocking, ad blocking software or some such thing installed? If so, look in the options of the program to see if there's an option to play a sound when it does it's thing. Usually, it's something like this that causes this type of thing. My first guess was another popup stopper except that the download.com link didn't have a popup for me. The other three did. Do you see the popups on those three? If not, do you have the Google toolbar installed? It has a popup blocker that makes a sound by default. The popup blocker can be turned off in the options or you can keep the blocker running and just turn off the sound. If no Google toolbar is installed how about another one. I don't use them but I know the Yahoo and MSN toolbars come with popup blockers too. If you use any of them, have a look in the options. I would guess you can turn the blocker or just the sound off in them too.

Boink and whirrr sound produced by IR adapter

I had the same problem, but I discovered that my two laptops were trying to establish an Infra Red connection. I disabled the IR feature and I got no more Boinks, or whirr sounds.

Hey there! I'm not sure if you resolved this issue yet or not, however! I have a fix! I think that you may be using PestPatrol in some way, shape or form. If so therein is your noise.

I had the same issue and like you, believed it was SP2. However it was actually PestPatrol's Cookie Blocker. Simply right click on the PestPatrol icon in your taskbar and choose Cookie Patrol -> Disable Sound.

    Hope this helped!

THANK YOU!!!!!!!!! That was it. PestPatrol.

That was it! I looked for all sorts of options for sounds, but I didn't check this one particular cookie blocker (I didn't even realize it was there, actually) for possible sounds. It was PestPatrol, just as you said. Thanks for the tip! This also explains the same noise on the work machines as well, since they have PestPatrol installed on them too.

Thanks again for all of the replies!!
