hindsight is such a nice thing. i removed my modem because i needed to get the computer to see my ethernet card so i could get on-line, just got back there with my little screwdriver and removed it put the ethernet in its place and im on line. got a problem computer doesnt see it, cant find and i get these nice little messages on a black screen saying i need vredir.vxd.(i know i read her post and replied to it) i think of everything i have uninstalled windows 98, norton virtual drive, norton anti-virus(and old one) and just took out my modem so i really dont know if that counts as uninstalling or not? and i put all those things back and uninstalled them again (the virtual drive, and the a-v) not windows or the modem. how do i get this computer to see the modem? it used to slip over to com 4, never could keep it com 1 and i dont know how to get to com 4 to see if it is there. i was hoping if i put dial-up back on i might get rid of that annoying message? maybe. help is needed again,as usual. on my profile instead of beginner lets make it 24steps down from beginner. i still have a lot of things wrong with pooor ole hal(the computer) i still get oes (about vxd, of course) and my sound isnt exactly right because my midi playback was disabled! i think i was taken over and still am but im trying to do what i can about getting hal well . thanks loads guys

Hi jan, sounds like hal is a good (and mainly reliable) friend of yours :)

Try this, go into Device Manager, highlight all the Com ports and "remove" them (highlight and click Remove, don't restart until they are alll removed, there may be 1, 2 or even 3).

It has just worked for me getting a modem from COM 1 to COM 3 (it should go over to COM 4 in your case).

    My hair-tearing has now stopped :D (where's the glue?...quick!!).

    Matt
