Every time I do a right mouse button in explorer on some mpg files I get a explorer crash showing that the file mciqtz32.dll (V6.5.2600.2180 - DirectShow MCI Driver) in windows/system32 has caused the problem, has anybody got any ideas?

Take a look Here and down to the section on "How PowerPoint Handles Multimedia" (and yes, I know you aren't having [or did not mention] PowerPoint problems). It will give you a good idea of what is going on behind the scenes and maybe a fix-it idea or two.

Also an excellent idea to run sfc /scannow and also to update your video drivers.

If the problem persists, we gotta go looking but mciqtz32.dll is implicated in so many of these sorts of crashes it may take a while to pin it down.

Thanks for the guidance but I managed to track down the culprit it was a program called Picaview (it enabled me to see thumbnails of videos and image files from within explorer) that I had not used since SP2 was installed and apparently it never will work under SP2 (a shame because it was a good program) guess I will have to try an alternative program or stick with XP's preview but this does not look at videos.

    Thanks again
    Paul
