Is it appropriate to ask about a game like Half-Life 2 on this forum?

Am trying to find my way to enable "cheat codes" on this game. Most instructions direct you to right click the shortcut, and under properties, add "-console" to the hl.exe file. My shortcut has Program files\Valve\Steam\Steam.exe" -applaunch 220" . It appears that every time I launch the game from the icon, I first get connected to Steam's or Valve's website for authorization or verification. I hesitate to alter the properties of the exe file, especially since it isn't even the game's own exe file but some link to Steam's website. I looked at various "gamer" websites, but most of them want way too much of a commitment to their community. I'm just looking for an answer to how to enable cheats on this game. the original half-life seemed much easier to deal with. This one involves a key, and an internet connection. I'm only interested in a single player version of this game.
Which leads me to a relaed question: What would happen if I were to install this game on a stand alone PC that is not connected to the internet?

    Directions...

Open Steam, go to your "Play Games" menu, and select Half-Life 2. Right click on it and select "Properties ". Click the Launch Options button, then type "-console ". Click "Ok ", then close. Double click Half-Life 2 to start the game. Once it is loaded and you are playing, press the ~ key to bring up the console. Then, enter "sv_cheats 1" and press [Enter]. You can now enter the following codes at the console window. Also, any code can be used as a command line parameter by prefixing it with the "-" character. Note: For games that were downloaded from Steam, to use cheats in single player mode, start the game with the "-applaunch -dev -tconsole" command line parameter.

Probably this is not the venue to discuss games - there are many other forums for that.

At any rate, my son, the gamer, provided the above info.....

    Games question continued

Thank you for your reply. I had just exhausted the other avenues. I did visit a few of the forums, and couldn't seem to navigate to the point where I would be given permission to post my own questions. I only posted here because the Other Software did include games.
Thanks again for taking the time and effort to reply.
    Kindest regards,
    Vic

Here is fine for game questions since they are certainly 'other software' just as much as MS Office is 'other software'.

However, since we don't get many gaming questions, we don't tend to have lots of gaming guru's hanging around to help out.

It's pretty much a chicken/egg thing. If we start getting game question activity, we'll probably also attract some folks who are good at answering those questions.
