I have always had Internet Explorer on my computer---IE6. I use Windows 98, 2nd edition, Pentium 233 chip, etc.

With the advent of Netscape 7.2 and Firefox, which are superior browsers, why do I need IE6?

Anyone out there with ideas ore solutions?

I don't think it's wise to remove it. I've tried this in the past just for giggles and it seems to me that it's more trouble than it's worth. I can almost guarantee you that if you remove it you'll receive error messages in programs that need some part of IE. I don't remember all of them but one example I can remember is Wordpad wouldn't work. I don't remember the exact error I got when I tried to use it but I had to jump through some hoops to get it to run. There were others too. Any of the problems I ran into I was able to fix but for those that aren't real experienced with windows I think they'd be better off to forget it. Just my 2 cents worth.
One reason I can think of right off the top of my head is you'll need it if you want to access windows update. Without it, you'll have to download the updates from the MS download catalog (or whatever they call it). Just one more hoop to jump through.

How do you remove Internet Explorer Reply to Thread

    Billybob and Zander:

After posting the message about removing IE, I thought about it and concluced that would be dumb. I have to agree 100% with your replies. At times it is necessary to have IE in order to download programs from the Microsoft site as I have had to do.

Thank you guys for your answers. It would be nice to have IE present, but not linked to everything when booting up. A necessary evil, I suppose.

A wise choice on your part. ;) I will say this for getting rid of it though. When I tried it Windows did run noticably faster. It's just that you run into so many road blocks after removing it. You'd be surprised how many programs rely on it in one way or another. You download a program you need thinking it's going to be the cat's meow only to find out when you install it that you're missing files it needs to run. It can be worked around by finding the files and copying them to where they were supposed to be but it seemed it happened way more often than I wanted to bother with. Some peoples opinions may differ from mine but IMHO it just isn't worth it.

How do you remove Internet Explore

    :)

    To Zander:

Your thoughts and conclusions are appreciated and so correct about IE removal. Thanks. I tried downloading a program from the Microsoft site this morning which failed because I was using my usual Netscape browser. It worked when I switched to IE. Looks like old Bill Gates linked practically everything to his programs.

But, as I said before, it would be nice to choose the browser you want when signing onto the internet without having to delete IE and then clicking the Netscape button.

    I will stop whining now.
