Since I have XP I have found that a file called ~ is repeatedly created and a copy placed in the Desktop. The file is apparently related to Outlook and probably to the address book, since I can read that it includes several email addresses. I have also found this type of file in a windows 2000 computer ( not in the desktop). I have deleted it several times and it comes back.

Do you have it? Do you know why it is created?

It is an artifact of an update. It is a backup of your address book. Rename it "anything.wab" and click on it and it will open. A new one will be created any time you make a change to your address book.

You can rename it and save it as a backup to your address book, or delete it. Just install any Windows updates that come along and it will disappear as mysteriously as it came.

It's a copy of your Windows address book and if you delete it it will be recreated when you next edit your address book.

It was caused by a Windows patch ages ago and has been subsequently fixed. Cheack to see that your patches are up to date. If you have at least SP1, that should be fixed. Most certainly with SP2. If it persists after that point, I think you will need to just delete it and try to forget it.

Should I save you a seat in my Remedial ESL class? Understand that one can audit the course free of charge. Thanks to your fine efforts, my scholarship was approved again this semester - anything I can do to return the favor?

    ;)

No, I'll just sit in my usual seat over in the corner. I'll be the guy with the pointed hat on. :)

Your first word of the day will be "Tilde." Learn it forward and backwards. I'll expect you to know both definitions. "Edlit" will be the most difficult. :D

    Any ??

Dude - that makes you either Gandalf or Harry Potter. Which ever one, I'm impressed.

Thanks to all for confirming and explaining the issue.

I am running SP1 since the PC crashed twice, being unable to boot, after installing SP2 and other updates. I'm not sure who the culprit was, but I am not planning on installing SP2 anytime soon.

francisco - the usual causes for major problems after doing the SP2 update are
    - hardware that won't play nice with the newer code (rare)
    - hardware drivers that won't play nice with the newer code (common)
    - sypware/malware or damaged files on the PC

In any case, if you've had problems with SP2 already then you probably will have them any time you try it unless the other issues are resolved first and that can be a major project or even impossible without spending some cash replacing stuff.

Unless you are in a position to save your personal stuff and do a fresh XP install (format the drive then install) and put SP2 on before doing anything else, then it is probably not worth the grief.

SP2 has lots of advantages but a system with SP1 that is running well and kept up to date on patches should be fine for quite a while.

FWIW, I had similar issues with an update to SP2 and finally opted for wiping my system and installing everything from the beginning. It worked fine and for me at least, was well worth the couple days to get my PC back the way I like it.
