Yes Sir you can! I have XP Home and when the system called for the Disk I put mine in and it said, "Wrong Disk, Use XP Home" which I was using. So I put the disk in first (disabled my auto-start), put SFC /Scannow and all went well.

I've had my system for three years and do this often.

    I have a Dell 8200

martinr121--As Mudd has said, you can use your Dell XP CD. You may be asked several times if you want to "Retry ". Just click Retry.
But are you sure you need to do a sfc /scannow? It usually does not hurt, but, depending on how old the CD is, you may find you have replaced some newer .dll files with older ones.
Have you posted the problem you are trying to solve here?

Hi Jim: No problem on my PC, a friend brought his over to have it "cleaned" because his teenaged boys got it clogged up with adware and spyware,to say nothing of 11 different viruses according to Norton.

So I cleaned it and loaded service pack 2, I was just thinking of other measures that might help it. But, after my last exchange with Newt, about an error in application, I don't think it would do any good, and might do harm. Especially since the CD is pre Service Pack Two. So, I won't run SFC on it.

If I hadn't yet loaded SP2 on the machine yet, I would run it, but not now.

Thanks for the good advice though, I often wonder what files might be replaced with older ones by SFC and since event viewer, system just reports that SFC ran and not what it did, you never really know.

    You take care,

    Martin

Edit: I have never owned a Dell computer, and after working on this one, inside and out, I never will.

Martin - the event log entry for Windows File Protection should report any file replacements or any other actions sfc had to take.

As to it replacing files with older versions - that can potentially happen but usually won't. On Win2K prior to SP4 it was a real problem and you pretty much had to apply all your updates after running SFC. Starting with SP4 and continuing with XP, they put in version checking and if SFC spots a file that is damaged but is newer than your basic XP CD, it should ask you for alternative media such as SP2 or a hotfix.

I'm not really sure how it handles a missing file which is the reason I posted the 'potential' quibble. In that case, I suspect you might well get an older version but since you had no file at all, it might be better having an older version than no version.

Newt, if event viewer, system reports what files were replaced, SFC has never replaced a file on this machine. If I have run it 100 times, 99 times event viewer says only in two reports that it started successfully and completed successfully.

The only time I have ever seen any report of file replacement activity was one time there were 4 entries that said (I don't remember the actual file names and this is not the actual language, just my recollection of the gist.)
    1. SFC replaced file abc.
    2. replacement of file abc failed.
    3. SFC replaced file cba.
    4. replacement of file cba failed.

I believe I posted those reports and I think you commented on them, but I just don't remember when or what your comments were.

I do remember one time a while ago when after running SFC or it's 98SE equivalent that Windows Update reinstalled all updates. I also remember a discussion with you on that, maybe not at that exact time, but you did put the quibble factor into that discussion too. I was questioning the wording in SFC that said files will be replaced in their "original" condition. And at that time you said the program may or may not replace newer files with older ones.

    And the beat goes on.

Charles: Thanks for the links, got to take daughter to basketball game now, will pursue them later. Trouble here is that I'll read the information, maybe even understand it, and in about 15 minutes or so I'll forget the details. As my father used to say, "the foibles getting old ".

    Take care,

    Martin

    Two comments
    1) I checked my Registry and find that my Source path is not to the CD, but rather to one of the I386 files. So I wonder why I even have to insert the Dell XP CD.
    2) I think it was Abraxas in a recent thread here, that suggested WindowsUpdatesList
    http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/wul.html
as a simple diagnostic to tell whether installed files are the latest (after a sfc /scannow or for any other reason).
