I would like to use Netscape (4.77) to view JPG's instead
of IE. Does anyone know the settings in the Explorer
filetype so that only one window comes up instead of a new
one for every JPG? I don't like IE at all, i'm an old Netscape
diehard...

Open My Computer, go to the view tab on the toolbar, then down to Folder options. Down toward the right side, click on the settings button. On the next window, it's in the second category where it says, Browse Folders As Follows. Put a dot in the one that says: open each folder in the same window. Then click OK on that window, and then click Apply & OK both on the remaining window. That sets the command.

Thanks Deloris for the reply. I aleady have that feature assigned. The one I was thinking of is the one in the "my computer/view/folder options/file types ", and in the "Registered file types" window, scrolling down to the "JPEG Image" entry. The properties now are for Internet Explorer with these settings:

Application used to perfomr action:
"....\iexplore.exe" -nohome

Use DDE is checked marked

DDE Message:
"file:%1 ",,-1,,,,,,

Application:
IExplore

These are the options I wanted to modify to Netscape to keep only one window open when viewing JPG's.

I do appreciate your response to my inquiry. Thanks.

I'll be hanged if that file types thing hasn't always given me a problem. I haven't ever been able to fully figure that thing out. It sounds like a bunch of mumbo jumbo to me. :D

Most things on here I've got a fairly good handle on so far, but that file types has always eluded me for some reason. I guess it just isn't one of my best categories. :D I really need to get into that file types thing & figure it out. :)

Maybe someone else can give you some information. I am sorry I wasn't of any help.

Deloris.

If you want Netscape to open instead of IE when you double-click a .jpg file you could try editing the JPEG Filetype by replacing the "application used to perform action" with the path to Netscape.exe in quotes, followed by a space and "%1" and also change the Use DDE entries to the ones for Netscape (see below) but I've never tried it. I have IE set to open JPG files myself.

Alternately, you could try reinstalling Netscape over itself and make sure jpg is selected under Netscape Communicator Extensions.

I don't think you should do either one, though, if you have more than one Netscape profile, since it may force you to chose your Netscape profile every time you double-click a .jpg file, and Netscape may also have problems opening .jpg files in a new window.

I found the following on the newsgroups which gives you more information:
from another NG Post:
Here is a page that gives more information, on
Understanding MS Windows File Associations
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/win98/maintain/assoc.asp

Here are some MS articles on the problem of IE opening jpg files in a new window:
Opening Picture Files Opens New Instances of Internet Explorer
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q199292

Unable to Open Images in Same Window
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q253788
==================================================
PS. My jpg files DO open in the same IE window and my JPEG Filetype entries look the same as yours:

Application used to perform action:
"C:\PROGRA~1\INTERN~1\iexplore.exe" -nohome

Use DDE is checked

DDE Message:
"file:%1 ",,-1,,,,,

Hi Swedeman,

You really don't need a browser to view your JPEG files. A very popular, easy to use image viewer program, IrfanView, would solve all your problems, without having to interfere with your Registered File Types.

Take a look at the program HERE.

When viewing your JPEG files, once you open the program, there are keyboard shortcuts which will enable opening your files in the same window. The price is right... freeware. I've used it for almost four years, and would not be without it. Current Version is 3.70.

Deloris: I appreciate your help, doesn't matter I was looking for something else.....thanks

Alice: Tried those settings, now two netscape windows pop with the same picture, plus a new one if I click another JPG file. I'll play with those settings to see if I can get it to work (they looked familiar to what I remember years back).
Thanks also for your help.

Ramona: If I can't get this to work, I'll use IrfanView (already have it on my computer). Rather then use IE.

Can't help it, I love Netscape as a browser....

Many thanks to all of you......
