To Westside or Ramona or whomever:

    Your nemisis is back.
Today I installed Foxfire 1.0 from the Mozilla website. I am still using Netscape 7.01 and WN98. I followed the simple Firefox installation instructions and did not create any profile. But:

When I click the Firefox icon on my desktop, I get the following ERROR MESSAGES. 1. "Device attached to C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox.exe is not functioning."
    2. "Error starting program: Firefox.exe file linked to missing export OLEAUT32DLL:77 "

    Again, any ideas?

    Hi Indy,

My first thought is that you should uninstall FF, then reinstall it. Please let us know what happens, in either case.

Are you on Windows 98 First Edtition? If so, it sounds like you need some updated DLL files to run Firefox. You may need to run the Windows Libaray Update(more info) to get the needed DLL's to run Firefox.

    Answers to your questions are:

I have reinstalled Firefox at least three times with the same error messages reappearing.

Windows98, second edition is my operating system.

Note to both of you. Ramona and Westside know of my problems attempting to install Netscape 7.2 from a purchased disc. It never worked. I have no problems installing and reinstalling Netscape 7.01 from a disc. Therefore, I consider NS 7.01 superior to 7.2. Sorry.

    Indycolt,

You poor thing, such problems with these browsers!

Try creating a pristine profile to make sure that it's not a corrupt setting. I know it's not likely, but try it anyway.

Open the Profile Manager using the below steps:

    Click on: Start | Run
    Type: firefox.exe -p

Did you migrate your Netscape 7 Profile during the Firefox install? If you're sharing the Profile, that could be the problem.

I will have to re-download Firefox before attempting your steps, I assume. I only have one profile in my Profile Manager and will have to add Firefox, I guess.

Late tonight. I will proceed tomorrow.

I do not see any comment to beanboy89 suggestion. You appear to have a missing file, necessary for the setup of any program.

"I do not see any comment to beanboy89 suggestion. "

My mistake. I went back, read beanboy89's suggestion and have downloaded the MS Library Update. That may be the answer. I will dowload Firefox once more, hopefully without the corrupted file.

If not, I will drop the project of installing Firefox as my Netscape 7.01 is satisfactory.

Thank you Westside, Ramona and Beanboy98.

    Westside,

Why would she need the Library update for Windows 98SE? I thought that was only for Windows 95? This is from beanboy's reference:

Q: Will Mozilla Firefox or Mozilla Thunderbird run on Windows 95? Are there issues involving running Mozilla products on older versions of Windows?

A: Yes, Firefox and Thunderbird will run on Windows 95, under the condition that you have appropriate system files installed. All Mozilla products (including Mozilla application suite, Firefox, and Thunderbird) since Mozilla 1.4 require version 2.30.4265 or greater of the system file OLEAUT32.DLL to run; this is implemented in the Windows Library Update. Finally, it is possible that you may need to update still other files (such as OLE32.DLL) in order to run Mozilla Firefox (or Thunderbird) on pre-OSR 2.x versions of Windows 95. If you heed this information, apply any applicable library updates beforehand, and keep your system relatively up-to-date, you should hopefully have a minimum of problems in installing and running Mozilla, Mozilla Firefox, or Mozilla Thunderbird on Windows 95 or other older Windows versions (specifically 98 original release, NT 3.51, and NT 4.0).

    Indycolt,

Check the version of your OLEAUT32.DLL file, and let us know if you have version 2.30.4265 or greater.

Firefox 1.0 will not work Reply to Thread

    Westside, Ramona:

I am posting this message using my recently installed FIREFOX browser. I see no need to worry about your concerns above such as versions, etc. What beanboy89 suggested worked. I downloaded and installed the MS Library which was for WIN 95 or 98 and it corrected or I should say added the missing OLEAUT32 DLL file. All is perfect. I just need to familiarize myself with Firefox geography and mechanics, but so far it looks no better than Netscape 7.01.

Someday I will attempt to again install Netscape 7.2 from my purchased disk after removing my Netscape 7.01. You never can tell, the MS Library may solve that mystery.

Aren't computers fun? Or is that frustrating? ;)

In your opinions, would the installation of the MS Library Update File enhance or help the installation of Netscape 7.2 onto my computer? I have had no luck so far and am curious. Thank you for your opinion.

    Indycolt,

Yes, if you were able to install Firefox, then you will be able to install Netscape. Remember to install Netscape 7.2 in a separate folder than your existing Version, if you plan to keep your existing version.

    :)

Thanks Ramona. I will again attempt installing Netscape 7.2 (separate folder) in the future. I have gotten rid of the old version of Netscape and am now operating with Firefox 1.0 and Thunderbird mail. So far, no problems. Firefox is very similar to Netscape with a few twists.

I may keep Firefox, but then again I may not and that is when I will try NS7.2.

Thanks for your answer and encouragement.

    Indycolt,

If you've already uninstalled all versions of Netscape, then there is no need to install it in a separate folder. You can let it install in the default folder:
    C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape.

Seems like all my browser problems with NS7.2 are solved.

This morning I removed (uninstalled Firefox and Thunderbird) from my system, pulled out the purchased disc for Netscape 7.2 and installed it with ease. As you said and as beanboy89 said the installation of MS Library was necessary.

A separate folder for NS 7.2 was not necessary. It installed perfectly this time, retained my e-mail address book and bookmarks and all is progressing. I hope NS 7.2 is better, but so far it looks very similar to my NS 7.01 which I had uninstalled prior to installing Foxfire.

So, difficulties are over. I will not bother you people until the next problem. Hee, hee. :)

    Indycolt,

Terrific news, and so glad you can now use the browser of choice! We look forward to helping you with any problems.
