Basically, I need to know what I'm looking for to know if the new fan will clip on to my video card or not.

    I'm running a Radeon 256MB 9600XT.

    Thanks much!

As these fans are specific to each model of card I suggest looking at the manufacturer's web site first. I guess your's has failed?

It hasn't failed, it's just making noises like it's on it's deathbed. Cleaning it & sucking the dust out of has done nothing either.

You might want to consider this as your optimum solution.

I had the same thing on my card (128mb 9000 pro) and was given the advice to remove the fan and put a drop of 3:1 oil on the bearing/bushing.
I admit that your card probably runs hotter and is worth alot more but 9 months later it's still running quiet.

A shot of WD40 to the bearing area has been known to work wonders. It takes the heat off of doing an immediate replacement. (pardon the pun) I used it on my PS fan over a year ago when it was slowing down and squealing - I haven't heard a peep out of it since. Use the plastic pipe supplied to direct the flow to the proper area.

I've always considered WD40 to be a tempoprary lubricant at best but I used it on a completely locked timeclock motor in 1969 and the unit is still in service. Go figure.

I think some things just don't get lubricated properly when they are manufactured and if you add that, they perform back up to specs for the rest of their normal intended life.

My Radeon 7500 died because I waited too long to replace the chugging fan. That gave me a chance to play around with my old Voodoo 5 5500 AGP before I bought my Radeon 9600XT! Perhaps you wouldn't have as much fun.

Seriously, as a temporary measure I would try the WD40 trick but in the long run you're asking for your chip to burn up at the moment your fan fails. I think CompUSA sells fan kits, but your better off searching for one designed for your card. Start with the manufacturer and go further if they won't provide a solution. (They might be more interested in selling you a new card, but that's what I think you're looking to avoid.)

Hehehe ..... I've still got mine in a box for safe keeping along with a great set of hacked XP drivers. Might have to pull the ol' boy out and have some fun myself one of these days.

    Rockster2u,

Yeah, they were great and still pack a wallop. I'm peeved that the new boards (like mine) come with the AGP3.0 slot and don't let me install my Voodoo. I really should have gotten the PCI version. My Voodoo 3 2000 and Voodoo 3 3000 are PCI, but they wouldn't measure up to today's cards whereas the Voodoo 5 5500 with drivers like Amigamerlin puts out still are quite competitive. These cards love fast processors.
