Unable to logon due to time inconsistency

    I have just setup Small Business Server 2003. I am unable to logon from a workstation as I get the message:

    "The time on this computer and the time on the network are different. "

    I cannot find anything on MS Knowledgebase about this?

    Please help.

    BTW I know the problem is not password related as I get a different message when I put in a wrong password.

    Check your Error Logs on the sever.

    Make sure your Workstation is pointed to the server for DNS.

    Oh I almost forgot.
    Is the workstation XP SP2?
    If the windows firewall is turned on by default it blocks port 123. (SNMP Service)

    Clarification - SNTP (Simple Network Time Protocol) rather than SNMP.

    Verify the time/date/year are correct on the DC.
    Log on to the workstation locally and set the time correctly. Then put in your login batch file:
    net time %LOGONSERVER% /set /y

    Make sure you don't just see the time correct, date/year etc must match too.

    Thanks for all your answers - it turns out - as was suggested - that although the time was synched, the date was not!

    How do I set it to automatically synch on logon and is there a way to get the server to get the time from an on-line source?

    On the server from a cmd prompt.


    C:\>net time /setsntp:time.ntst.gov

    The clients should sync at log on.

    Yup. If w32time service is active on the client PCs, they should synch with your local time server. You can watch the event logs on a client PC to make sure.

    If any of them don't seem to be working for whatever reason, you can force them to use a slightly older method - but one that still works.

    On any problem client, just open a cmd window and point their 'net time' to your server so
    net time /setsntp:<servername>
    where servername is your SBS box.

    The above is a one-time tweak and after that, the client w32time updates should run as normal.

    BTW - while it is nice to have your SBS server updating to the correct time via an authoritative internet time server, the only thing that matters to your LAN is that all are in agreement so forcing clients to use the SBS server will keep things running properly even if the SBS server can't update it's time for some reason.

    That should do the job right there. That will set the time to that of the servers upon login.

    I read somewhere that those entries could be done in the REG but I dont remember where it was. Might have been a MS article.

    Found some good info here
