I received the latest updates notice for Win XP. I downloaded and installed all but one. I don't want to install that "Malicious Software Removal Tool" just yet. How can I temporarily get rid of that "windows update" reminder icon without installing the above mentioned program for now? I get an option to "don't remind me about these updates" but I don't want to click it beacuse there may be some updates I want to be reminded of.

Try selecting the item as if to install it and you should be given an additional option that allows for placing it on the "Hidden" list so it will be ignored in the future. You can elect to unhide it when you see fit.

Incidentally, I installed that item and I don't see any evidence of where it went nor has it ever done anything that I can tell. I expect I should go read about it but as long as it doesn't bother me, I'll leave it alone. :)

Edit: Thanks Christer, you saved me the effort.

The Malicious Software Removal Tool doesn't get installed. It is a self extracting cab file which extracts into a temporary folder. When it has been run, it deletes itself completely. Well, not completely, there is a log file and a prefetch file lingering but they do no harm.

Go ahead and let it do its thing ...... ;) ...... !

    Christer

    Edited:

The lingering files are Windows\Debug\mrt.log and Windows\Prefetch\mrt.exe but no "mrt.exe" anywhere.

The reason I don't want to install it right now is that in reading about it, it states that it SENDS info to Microsoft which I DON'T want to do. There is SUPPOSED to be an option for you to NOT send info to Microsoft during the installation process, but knowing Microsoft, that part may not appear.

    a little more info...

You will see this program every month in Windows update. This program scans for certain 'malicious' programs and will remove them if found. The only information sent to MS is if something is detected and removed and what the offending software was. I think Microsoft's heart is in the right place on this one, albeit long overdue. This scanner is also available online HERE . If you need to run it between the monthly Windows update.

    B

I quote from The Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool helps remove specific, prevalent malicious software from computers that are running Windows Server 2003, Windows XP, or Windows 2000 :

As I understand it, only non-personal/anonymous information is sent and that to improve the tool.

I don't worry about it ...... ;) ...... unknowingly, I'm probably broadcasting other information of a more personal nature!

A registry solution for the reporting issue can be found @ http://support.microsoft.com/kb/891716.

Scroll down to "FAQs ", where you'll find the following info:

"Q4. How can I disable the infection reporting component of the tool so that the report is not sent back to Microsoft?

A4. An administrator can choose to disable the infection reporting component of the tool by adding the following registry key value to computers. If this registry key value is set, the tool will not report infection information back to Microsoft.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\MRT\DontReportInfectionInformation with the value of "1 ". Note that this value should be of type REG_DWORD.

This functionality is automatically disabled if the following registry key value exists: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\WUServerback to the topThis registry key value indicates that the computer is connected to a SUS server. "

(As Christer noted, you can locate the log file @ Windows\Debug\mrt.log, so you won't miss any info by doing this.)
