I think we all are looking forward to this release and an opportunity to see what its capable of. Personally, I like the anti-spyware beta and was particularly pleased that our machines checked out squeaky clean. If this "removal" tool lives up to its advance billing, it would be a big score for the "Good Guys ".

    ;)

Thanks Joe, probably should have made it more explicit, all the attention has been on Anti-Spy.

OK, so now this tool is out. Can one of the MS Whiz Guys (or Ladies) help me out here. I've installed it a couple of different ways on two squeaky clean machines. One I copied and put in a folder which is not the way to go because its a self extracting cab. The other I just did from Windows Update and have no idea where it was installed. Am about to go searching and exploring but thought it wouldn't hurt to get some eXPert guidance on this one. Thanks.

    ;)

edit: OK, so the remnants are in Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download\Update\XXXXXXXXXXX ........
And, will appreciate any guidance on this from all quarters.

Thank you sir - I should have done more reading before asking but your link clarified a couple of other questions too. Much appreciated.

It wasn't installed. The link provided obviously will allow you to install the Stand Alone Version which IMHO should be done. Otherwise you have to wait until the next update to run it. You can find the log at:

    C:\Windows\Debug\mrt.log

balo - you're half right but I appreciate it regardless

edit: On second thought you're 100% correct because the file I copied, while it runs the tool from the self extracting cab, doesn't install any other executable. And, I'd agree - this puppy should be downloaded and saved so it can be run on problem machines if necessary

    Rockster2U,
not a MS Whiz Guy but anyway:

I downloaded to local HDD from "MS Download" and when I ran it, during a split second I saw it extract to a location on my D: in a multi-letters-numerals folder. (No time to take notes ...... :( ...... !)

I agreed to the EULA and it did its thing resulting in no malware found.

After that I had a look in Windows Explorer, files and folders sorted by date and I found Windows\Debug\mrt.log and Windows\Prefetch\mrt.exe but no "mrt.exe" anywhere.

My conlusion is that nothing gets installed but goes poof with the extraction folder.

More details here: The Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool helps remove specific, prevalent malicious software from computers that are running Windows Server 2003, Windows XP, or Windows 2000

Another thing to note, the Malicious Software Removal Tool is a roll-up of all of the malware removal utilities that Microsoft had previously released. It scans your PC and removes various viruses and worms, including Berbew, Blaster, DoomJuice, Gaobot, Mydoom, Nachi, Sasser, and Zindos. The tool doesn't include any real-time scanning capabilities. Microsoft says it will release new versions of the tool each month alongside its monthly security updates.

I'm not saying that Microsoft won't build good security products. If they charge for those products, I believe it to be unethical every bit as much as news reporters taking money from special interests to report a news story or a doctor having sexual relations with a patient. Each business has a boundary.

But in as much, I did test the product on its first day. It found nothing in my machine I didn't expect. There was spyware attached to my P2P program.
