    Hi All,

My internet connection stopped today. All of a sudden-none of our 6 computers could connect.

I called the isp to see if there was an outage:nope.

So I inspected the physical connections-all fine.

All 6 computers could talk via the network-but none could go online(we share a connection on a cable modem through a firewall/router and 8 port switch).

So, I bypasses the firewall and switch-and connected fine. Well, I thought-so it's either the firewall/router or switch. Replaced them both-same problem.

At one point- I got a cryptic " "there is an ip address error with another system on the network. "

Now, I don't know WHAT to do-no ip settings were changed!

    HELP!!

You are probably using the router's DHCP, dynamic ip addresses are assigned to each computer by the router. This is a common issue on home networks espicially if any of the local computers are laptops, or if any of the computers use Standby Mode.

When a computer goes into Standby the net connection is cut by default. When it wakes up the net connection is restored-refreshed. If during that time period, the router reassigns addresses, which it will when using DHCP instead of static addressing, then it is possible that 2 computers will have the same ip address.

The solution is to shut down the computers, unplug the network cable from each computer, reset the router using the reset button, and then one by plug in a net cable and boot a computer.

I recently had a similar issue cause 2 laptops were added to my home lan and discovered this when could no longer access network shares.

The best solution however is to use static ip addressing.

Thanks for the help-that makes sense!

I followed these steps and it still doesn't work..... I disconnected everything from the network-reset the router, and modem, and switch-connected the server to the network, and booted up.

Still not connecting. It works when I bypass the router and switch, but that's all. Any other ideas? This is really a problem......

    Still can't connect!

Still won't connect through the network. Has no one else had this problem?
