i am using win98. whenever i open up something that requires acrobat reader, reader begins the process of opening and then a window will open up saying this program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. i am using reader 5.0. i have tried deleting and reinstalling.

controls--Suggest you go to http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html and see what version of Reader they recommend you install. If it is more recent than what you have, then download it, but uninstall your present version before installing the new.
Many newer .pdf files cannot be read with old versions of Reader now.
Also Reader sometimes requires that ActiveX controls be permitted to run. If the above has not helped, check your "Run ActiveX controls and plug ins" setting in IE Tools|Internet Options|Security tab|Custom Level.

If upgrading doesn't solve the problem you can work around it for now by right clicking on any link to a pdf file and choosing save target as. This will download the file to your computer and then you can open it using the reader instead of IE. Also, you can turn off the IE integration in Acrobat Reader by clicking on the edit menu in Acrobat Reader, then preferences and click on options. Uncheck the line that says "display pdf in browser ". If you do this IE will download the file just as any other download rather than opening it in IE. I realize it's not a fix but it'll get you by until we can figure out what the problem is.

ok, i checked my active x controls, and they are all set correctly. I also read up on acrobat and could not come up with an answer. Zander, your right, saving it and then opening it aside from ie works. Thank you. i can get by with this as i dont use acrobat too often, but i am still left wondering why it wont work correctly

I had the same problem.... I had to uninstall the version I had (5.0) and download the newest release and installed it... The problem was fixed...

I seem to have a problem with IE/pdf integration only when attempting to open particularly large pdf's, those that are larger than a 1.5 meg or so. It also seems to be effected by the sites server speed. Since this is only sporadically fussy, I put up with it and take it on a case by case basis. When it does happen I use the workaround mentioned, "download the pdf ". For myself Reader 5.0 never was very good at IE integration version 6.0 seems to work a bit better.

Note there is an option somewhere in either version that controls whether (while using IE to click on a pdf) Pdf opens in IE or opens acrobat separately, Some have found that disabling that particular option in acrobat helps. Sorry to be so flaky on exactly how you do this but it's been a while since I even tried to fight this battle. As stated previously, the workaround was less painful. I let IE/acrobat win this battle so I could live to fight in the bigger war.
