Isn't it possible to have a Personal Toolbar in Firefox?

I found it was handy in Netscape 7.2 and thought it would also be an option in Firefox.

    Thanks.

    vegaspat,

Yes, you can still have a Pesonal Toolbar:

    Click on Manage Bookmarks
    Highlight the Personal Toolbar
    Click on "Edit "
Select: Set as Bookmarks Toolbar Folder

If the selection is grayed out then do this:

Open the Bookmark Manager and select any other subfolder.
Click on: Edit | Set as Bookmarks Toolbar Folder
Now go back and select the Personal Toolbar folder,
Click on: Edit | Set as Bookmarks Toolbar Folder

    Ramona

EDITED: this information is now correct for Firefox, Version 1.0

I wonder my reply went? But it happens once in a while.
But, my reply said that it is not done the same way as in Mozilla or Netscape.
One can only check or uncheck View|Toolbar, in Manage bookmarks, although I am not sure what that does..
But, I can select View|Toolbar|Bookmarks Toolbar (outside the Bookmarks). But, I must have selected the Personal Toolbar. Not sure how I got there other that I imported the NS7.1 settings.
Ramona, could you please check what I said.

    Westside,

The View | Toolbars | Bookmarks Toolbar hides/shows the Personal Toolbar. Is that what you wish to confirm? If so that is a yes...

    Ramona,

I did what you said and I see NOTHING anywhere that says anything about the Personal Tool Bar.

I am using Firefox 1.0.

    Ramona,

I guess we are using different versions of Firefox. I have been experimenting and not quite sure how I did it, but I have a Personal Toolbar.

I had to click on EDIT/Set as Bookmark Toolbar Folder with the imported bookmarks from 7.2. In 7.2 I had set up a Personal Toolbar and when I imported it and then highlighted it and did the Edit thing I got the Personal Toolbar.

I would think their Help file would explain this. It is not even mentioned.

Now, what in the heck is a "LIVE" bookmark?

    Thanks.

    vegaspat,

Live Bookmarks are great for pages on which you wish to keep current on headlines, or information. For an example, look at this page, in the lower right hand corner, just above your clock, in the System Tray, you will see a small icon. Click the icon, then click on "Subscribe to RSS Feed ". RSS is an acronym for Rich Site Summary. In other words, once you subscribe for the live feed for the mozillazine.org site, and you want to see the latest headline, all you need do is mouseover the Live Bookmark, and the most current headlines will be available. You can decide whether or not you're interested enough to open the page... This is available to many websites now. See this explanation which goes into more detail: Firefox Live Bookmarks

I'm using the same Version as you, Firefox 1.0, however, my instructions were for versions prior to 1.0. Frankly, I hadn't needed to re establish my Personal Toolbar in 1.0, therefore didn't realize it was different. I'll edit the above, so no one else will be confused, as you were. At any rate, you did get it working.

    Ramona,

I haven't even dealt with the Live Bookmarks yet, but have another question.

How do you change the location where your downloads are saved? I downloaded my first file and it went directly to my DeskTop. I looked everywhere to designate a folder of MY choice.

Looks like your're pretty busy with this Firefox stuff!!

That can be very annoying to have all of your files be downlaoded directly to the desktop. To have Firefox ask where a file should be downloaded each time go to Tools > Options > Downloads > choose "Ask me where to save every file. "

    Hi Pat,

Ramona is offline right now, and you're on, so I'll step in.

Open Tools > Options > Downloads, and make the selections shown here. F:\DOWNLOADS is my downloads folder, so choose Other... and browse to the folder you want to use for downloads. If you don't already have one, you can create one from the "Browse for Folder" requester.

If you always want to download to that folder, and you never rename a file before downloading it, leave "Save all files to this folder:" selected (as in the screenshot).

If you frequently change your download destinations (I do), or rename files before downloading them (I do), select "Ask me where to save every file" (seen here).

    HTH.

I feel pretty dumb right now. I looked no further than the Downloads tab.
Sorry. It is corrected as I type.

    Thanks for the help.

Okay, I'm back to trying to figure out the Live Bookmarks.

I went to the link mentioned in Ramona's last post and read the article about the Live Bookmarks. I went to two of the sites mentioned in the article and never did see that icon that Ramona and the article states would be there?

What am I missing here?

I have tried RSS, and used the Sage extention. I was able to view one Live Update, once. The next time I could not. I never saw any icon.
I think that Ramona is correct. The Live Update worked in 0.9.3, but I have not been able to do it in FF1.0. I have not had the time to do anything more, and I was going to give up, but, now you got me interested. But not until tomorrow.

    Hi Pat,

I'm a bit puzzled, too, as Ramona says that we should see the RSS icon on this page, and I don't.

On the webpage she references, the only links I see that show the icon are Slashdot, BBC News, and Syndic8. Yahoo News does not.

I suppose live bookmarks are handy if you're constantly checking news stories but, personally, I don't see the need.

I just got Wizz RSS News Reader, which is v.0.3.3, from the extention group. I have used it for only a few minutes, but it accesses a lot of sites, from its Public List. So far, have had so many sites, that i have not attempted to manage it. By the way I updated it v.0.4.5. The version available at the firefox extentions is way outdated, but very usable.

Thanks, but I am thinking that I am not going to fool with the Live Bookmarks. I have enough going on most of time with this PC. :)

Thanks again for all the help.

    Likewise. Also unnecessary.
I have all the websites I care for in my Tabs, and you can refresh them anytime.
