    XP pro
    no volume control icon
went to control panel / sounds and devices / checked "Place volume icon in task bar "
Error : "cannot display because volume control program has not been installed. To install use add /remove programs in control panel "
Went to microsoft windows update and found article 319095 that explains how to fix missing or damaged sndvol32.exe file. Followed the instructions, but still not fixed. rebooted and tried again, but received same error message when trying to get the volume control icon to display in task bar.
Any suggestion's would be appreciated, thank's.

To install use add /remove programs in control panel-> Did you go into Windows Compents and do the install?

I looked in there, but did not see it listed as an item to select. I also tried to expand sndvol.ex from the xp software disc to c:\windows\system32
as suggested in the microsoft support memo #319095, but received an error message "can't open input file: sndvol32.ex "
What does it mean if it is not displayed in windows components ?
    Thank's

The volume control is listed under accessories and utilities>Details>Multimedia>Details>volume control.

    Is that where you searched?

    Hi all,
I don't have this listed in my "add/remove windows componenets" either. I'm wondering if this is the difference between a "retail xp" and an "OEM xp "? Of course it's quite possible that we're both suffering from some incomplete add/remove components problem. Hmmm...I'll have to look into this!

Can you type sndvol32.exe onto your startmenu runline and hit enter? What happens?

Did you know that msconfig typed on the runline also can extract files and put them where they go? On the "general tab" is an expand button. You can try getting the sndvol32.exe in this manner. You browse to the file on the CD and put it in your system32 folder.

    ----------
In device manager, how does your sound card look? Notice any problems?

    Thank's for the info.
I have retail XP Pro and the volume control program is not listed in the add / remove windows programs sub menu's under accessories or any other that I can see.
No problems noted in device manager for the sound card, and sounds work fine, except can't put the volume control on taskbar.
I am not sure I understand what you mean about msconfig ???
When I type sndvol32.exe in the run line and hit ok, it gives error that says it can not find the file.
Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated, thank's.

Download sndvol32.exe from here. You can download it to your desktop and give it a try, if it works move it to your *\system32 folder:
    http://www.relaxingsoftware.com/updatedfiles.htm

It is an exact copy down to the version and size of my own sndvol32.exe. I have downloaded it and it works fine on my computer. I realize this is sort of workaround maybe doing you a disservice in the long run as the expand method if done carefully and correctly with attention being paid to proper syntax and spaces and making sure you have and are in the cdrom's i386 folder(directory), and your system32 folder is usig the path you typed, the expansion of this file should have been accomplished.... but any landing is a good landing and downloading the sndvol32.exe is a workaround that may be less painful.

    ---Strictly for F.Y.I---
As for msconfig: (again this maybe a bit of a nuisance if not done correctly):
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;888017&FR=1&PA=1&SD=HSCH and it does ask for a restart after the expansion.

    ---------
As a side note and being cautious have you virus scanned? Sndvol32.exe is known to be the target of many a trojan virus. Just wondering how you managed to lose it in the first place.

I downloaded the file directly to the system32 folder, selected the box to put it on the taskbar, and everything works great.
Thank you very much for your help.
Yes, I run virus scan often and no problems. I have no idea what happened to cause me to lose it in the first place.
    Thank's again.
