I'd like to remove the security center icon from the taskbar. I'm just beginning to deal with XP SP2 on new computers for my company. I don';t want any of the security center services, and I especially don't want users turning on any of the security center "features ". I searched for a solution on the forum but didn't find one. If I missed it, I apologize for asking this question again, but how do I get rid of the damned icon?

    TIA

    Bob

    Start>run>services.msc
    Disable the security center service.

Really though, the only "features" anybody can turn on would be XP's firewall and that's not really a security center feature. Security center is really just a monitor that watches to make sure your AV, firewall, windows update are all doing as they should. If they're all up and running the icon goes away. If for some reason your AV quits, the security center will notify you of this. If you choose to use an AV or firewall that it doesn't reconize or see for some reason you can tell it to not monitor it by opening the security center and clicking on "change the way security center alerts me ". This too will get rid of the icon, in the tray but if you're going to disable it for all three of them in this manner you might as well disable the service itself. No sense in having it running if it doesn't have anything to do (IMHO).

In Control Panel > Security Center > to the left there are settings for how alerts are displayed. Uncheck all boxes.

Thanks guys, now I feel a little stupid, but MS just about insures that's what will happen when you look at their selections.

OldBob--I suspect Zander's suggestion will do what you want, but you could also right click on a blank spot in the Taskbar|Customize|highlight Windows Security Alerts|in the Behavior column click the down arrow and choose "Always Hide "|OK|Apply|OK.

I guess that I should have read more before suggesting a solution to the question in the thread title.

Anyway, I have never considered killing the service because if something should go wrong ...... ...... the Security Center would be my first stop to check conditions.

    Hi Zander,

I shut the NA icon down the way Christer went thru the procedure. That gets rid of the active alert, but still is there in the Control Panel for me to be able to check.

I don't have auto updates on, and don't want to be bothered with the nag and don't like clutter, so this is a good compromise, for me anyway.

    Regards - Charles
