When I first set up my home network, in "View Network Connections" window I only had the following "Local Area Conection' which was both my "LAN or High-Speed Internet ". Recently a second conection poped up called "Internet Gateway ". (I beleive this has something to do with TCP/IP settings?)

How did this get there all of a sudden? And how do I remove it?

The bytes received & sent are continuously active slowing down my conection.

Currently Running XP Service Pack 1

Did you possibly turn on ICS (Internet Connection Service) - it's the utility that allows a windows PC to act as a host for other PCs on a local network to share a modem (dial up or broadband)?

Start - Help & Support - search for "ICS ". Good overview there with directions on where to look for the settings.

Im pretty sure thats the UPNP for the router.
It automatically forwards ports for apps like MSN and yahoo ect.
For example when you do a file transfer over messenger it opens those ports for the machine your on.

    Problem Solved

    I solved my problem

    Go to control panel>add/remove programs>add/remove windows components>networking services>

Remove check from box for Universal Plug and Play
Remove check from box for Internet Gateway Device Discovery and Control Client

Take note of whether they already had checks in the boxes and if they did do one at a time and in the above order to see which is the culprit. You should not have a check for the Universal Plug and Play by default.

I wouldn't agree. Do you really want a system that will allow someone else to put a device on your network and have other people's systems use that device without the administrator's control. Personally I wouldn't. It is a system that is crying out for abuse.

    point taken.
I just like the idea that when I'm chatting on messenger and want to trade a file I can do it without going in to the router and forward the port.

Might want to read up here: http://www.upnp.org
