The IP addresses must be different.

Part of your problem sounds like a firewall issue. You have to set the firewall to allow packets from the other PC to be accepted.

I know this isn't English class but please use periods, capital letters at the beginning of sentences and all that stuff. I had lots of trouble following what you typed and at my age, I don't need more eyestrain.

Thanks. I'm old enough that my brain wants to see what it expects.

What XP service pack(s) are you running and are you using any 3rd party firewall software?

On the desktop i'm running Xp home version 2002,with service pack 2 v.2135.
And on the laptop (what i thought was Xp pro) turns out to BE Xp home version 2002 ,with service pack 1.
I'm not using any 3rd party firewall ,just the one that came with Xp.

Chapps, you have to set up a home network. XP has a wizard to help you:

    1. run the confiuration wizard of your router, make sure DHCP is enabled, router IP should be 192.168.1.1, LAN IP start should be 192.168.1.2, end should be 192.168.1.254
Make sure your internet provider settings are correct.
Make sure wireless is enabled, and use a SSID broadcast, use a name which must be the same when you configure this in your laptop.

    2. start/configuration/networking/set-up of small (home)network. I translate from my dutch xp version, so the terminology should be about the same.

In the network wizard, you have to give the network a name; use the SAME name when running the wizard on your pc and on your laptop.

Choose network conn thru a gateway, the rest is self-explanatory.

After running the wizard set up the wireless configuration wizard on your laptop: use no encryption to start with, use the same SSID as your router, and scan.

    Erik

Well i hooked her laptop up this morning to try again. And to my surprise i had a connection, and all was working properly. I hadn't done anything different to the settings so I'm a little puzzled. Just thankful I have a connection.
    Thanks to all who replied

    1 more question.
Before i hooked up the wireless router my connection speed from isp was a 10Mbps connection.
Now it say's iI have a 100Mbps connection.Speed is the same, packets received is more than packets sent. Is this going to pose a problem?

What your looking at is the speed between network devices and not your internet connection.
The 10Mbps was the speed from your PC to your Modem.
The 100Mbps is the speed from your PC to the Router which is fairly common.
If you were able to check the speed from the Router to the modem it is 10Mbps like your PC to Modem was.

I highly doubt your ISP bandwidth speed is 10Mbps unlesss you have fiber to your front door.
The fastest download speed I have witnessed was 7Mbps in San Diago Ca. on Cox Cable.
