    Hi
I have Norton Speed Disk installed as part of Norton SystemWorks 2004 Pro
and up till recently it has appeared to work fine but i am now getting the following error message when i try to access my C: drive with Speed Disk.

An unexpected error occurred while communicating with Speed Disk Service ( NOPDB.EXE ), Please exit Speed Disk, restart the Speed Disk Service and try again.
If problem persists, reinstall Speed Disk

The error message does not appear when i try to defrag my D: drive.
    I have tried the following:
    Re-installing Speed Disk
Trying the fix from Symantic HERE But the "Use simple file sharing" option does not appear to be available even if i try from Safe Mode.

I have also tried windows DeFrag but it runs very slowly, Speed Disk also seems to run very Slowly when i try to defrag my D: drive , it may be my imagination but it only started happening after installing SP2, could there be a Link ?
My drives are 2 x Seagate 200gb Barracudas with about 40gb used on each drive, the defrag has started to take hours instead of 10 to 15 Min's as before.
Any help and advice would be most welcome.

You may have something running on C: that needs to stop so defrag doesn't have to contend with it. Do you have the indexing service running? That will slow all things down.

    Start>Run>type: msconfig

On the general tab, select diagnostic startup and reboot. (Don't forget to go back and make it normal startup after you are finished.)

Can you run speed disk like that?

Thanks Bmoore1129 for your reply, why would i need to stop anything running when Speed Disk has worked okay in the past what do you think has changed to require this to be done?
I have stopped the error message by reverting back to a previous Ghost image but speed disk still seems to run slowly even on drive D: which is only used for backups.

I have the same problem, It started right after service pack 2 was installed. I believe that is what caused the problem. Unfortunatly Norton no longer supports this version of Speed Disk.

I'm an avid Norton fan and have used System Works and Speed Disk on Win98SE and WinME with great results. On WinXP, it's a different tune.

The native XP defragger and Speed Disk fight eachother. The native does some background work which makes it quicker when a manual defrag is done but when Speed Disk is used, it has a different opinion on what is the optimum. It rearranges files and folders and as soon as it has completed, the native defragger starts moving them back.

The native XP defragger is a super-lite version of Diskeeper. There is a freeware version of Diskeeper 7 which can be downloaded here but be quick about it ...... ...... it seems to be on it's way out.
