I cannot defrag as a message comes up to use chkdsk/f. I went to run and entered chkdsk/f and it then came up cannot find file. I have no idea what chkdsk is and need to defrag.
Also. computer still hangs even though I keep it very clean from ads, temp files etc. I am reluctant to remove anything from the registry as I don't know what is needed, being an inexperienced user and still learning. Sure hope someone can help me with both problems

biddie--I think this message is telling you to fix errors on the drive you are trying to Defrag. Perhaps the easiest way to do that is to click My Computer|Right click on the drive involved (probably C:\)|Properties|Tools tab|Error checking|check the box "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors "|Start. This could take some time depending on the size of your drive.

It's always an excellent idea to get your backups up to date prior to performing a chkdsk /f since the /f switch will "repair" all errors that it finds. There is always the outside chance that it will cause the drive to be unbootable and data could be at risk. Not often but still worth considering and doing current backups.

The best policy is to run chkdsk without the /f switch and see if it reports any problems. If not then you need not go any further. If it does find problems, it won't take any action, just report to you. That gives you the warning you need so you can get your backups in order before running it again with the /f switch.

BTW, the reason you couldn't run chkdsk/f was likely that you were trying to do it from the RUN window and not from a command session. Perhaps it was a blessing.

    chkdsk

    Thanks for your reply surferdud
I ran chkdsk, it reported deleting index entry, once again could not get chkdsk/f. Tried defrag but got the same message that chkdsk was about

Go to Start > Run, and type:
    chkdsk /f <Enter>
(Note the space before the /f.)

When it asks if you want to do the check on reboot, answer, "y ", and reboot.
