I don't see anything, either with WinXP Home. And, I don't see anyway to add it, unless you include the OE extention.
I have an advantage in blocking IE with Zone alarm. No ninetyone windows.

I have IE blocked in ZA, as well, and I still get the IE windows (actually 90, rather than the 91 mentioned in the other post).

This is how I made Outlook Express the default:

I opened Outlook Express, went to Tools -> Options and, where it said, "This application is not the default mail handler" I clicked the 'Make Default' button.

That immediately made the URL:Mailto Protocol entry reappear in Folder options, Filetypes, and the application used (in Advanced -> Edit) now shows:
    "C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" /mailurl:%1
    (Use DDE checked)

I also now see in Reggedit for both HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\mailto\shell\open\command and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\mailto\shell\open\command
    .... under Data:
    "%ProgramFiles%\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" /mailurl:%1

Internet Options, Programs tab also shows Outlook Express for E-mail (I left Thunderbird for Newsgroups). Opening a mail link in Firefox now opens Outlook Express. So does File -> Send Link.

Why Outlook Express is not working correctly when it is set as default, I can't say. Maybe someone at the IE/OE forum can help with that, if you're concerned.

    Mike ...

I make OE the default exactly the same way you do, but still don't show URL:Mailto Protocol in the File Types list after doing so.

I'm not particularly concerned about OE's behavior, as I don't use it for email ... never have, never will. It was curiosity, based solely on the previous posts, that caused me to experiment with it, at all.

    Ramona,

I use both '98 and XP. The Xp one is the one that I have Firefox and Thunderbird installed. I knew that there was a Home edition and the Professional edition. I just found it strange that the URL deal was listed in mine and not the other XP users. It is at the top of the listing in the "NONE" extension catagory.

I will try your latest tip and let you know if it works.

    Thanks.

    Okay, folks.

With Ramona's last tip, I FINALLY got it to work correctly.

Hopefully, I haven't messed anything else up. I ususally do.

Thanks to everyone for the help. ;)

Using File -> Send Link reverted to opening Thunderbird just now, even though Outlook Express was showing as the application used in Filetypes, URL:Mailto Protocol. I also looked inThunderbird Tools ->Options -> General tab, and the option, "Use Thunderbird as the Default Mail Application" was NOT checked!

So.... I ended up going to Add or Remove Programs -> "Set Program Access and Defaults" -> Custom. Under "Choose a Default E-mail program" I selected Outlook Express there, and that seemed to do the trick. I got the idea from

Internet Protocols in the Windows Registry
    A Mozilla perspective

I did some looking around and you're not the only one with OE problems after installing Netscape/Mozilla/Thunderbird. Maybe it doesn't matter to you but it would still bother me if OE wasn't working, on principle.

    Pat and Mike ...

Sounds like a Tracy / Hepburn movie! :D

As one of our other members is so fond of pointing out, everyone's installation is different. In addition, Windows has all kinds of quirks, and almost nothing surprises me, any more ... I'm constantly discovering that I'm unable to duplicate the behavior of someone else's programs or settings.

OE works OK, except in this instance but, as previously stated, I never use the Send Link... feature in FF, and I never use OE. If I could, I'd remove it.

Remove OE? That is easily done. I don't have OE installed. Strickly a FF/TB man.

    Bill ...

Are you sure about that? I have previously tried to remove OE via Add/Remove's "Add/Remove Windows Components" section, but the Outlook Express folder remains in my Programs folder and, when I click on the MSIMN.EXE file contained therein, OE opens right up. And, I can neither move nor delete the Outlook Express folder.

You are absolutely right....I had not checked back on my windows explorer. It was put right back in after I deleted the folder. I had never installed it from the gitgo so it is one of those "required" programs for windows to work.

I do think I have run across a site some where that gives a routine for removing OE and IE. I'll think on it for awhile and see if the memory returns.

    Remove OE

I haven't tried this but I will. I will have a fresh Drive Image ready and waiting first. ;)

Here is the MS version of the same thing.

I'm not sure it's worth all the trouble, but let me know how it goes. As I said, I never use OE so, most of the time, I don't even know it's there.

By "OE working" I meant when OE is set as the default mail handler. My wife uses IE and wants mail links to open in OE so I have to make sure everything works ;)

I did notice that, in Firefox, with OE set as default, although File -> Send Link and Mail -> New Message both open Outlook Express, the Mail -> Read Mail link doesn't do anything. My wife doesn't use Firefox, and I don't mind that minor flaw. There's a bugzilla report on the issue, so it's been duplicated:
    https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=259170
read mail will not start Outlook

No problem in Internet Explorer though... it opens OE fine from all of the Mail button options (read Mail, New Message, Send link, Send Page).

    Mike ...

    When I said
"OE works OK, except in this instance [Send Link] ... "
I meant with OE set as default.

I've never understood why wives have to do everything differently from their husbands (IE/OE, instead of FF/Tbird, for instance). Anyway, I no longer have that problem (the ex uses a Mac) and, although the "LIML" has allowed me to switch her to FF, she still insists on using OE.
