    ;) Hi folks,
I have a vivitar camera (new) and when i plug it into my USB port it`s supposed to appear in "my computer" as a mass storage device or a removable storage device. This doesn`t happen.
    I`m running XP with SP2.
I have another digi camera (Aiptek) which works fine on any USB port.

When i plug in the vivitar it brings up the new hardware wizard which asks me to install the software CD, if I have one, which I do, but its only for windows 98.
In device manager the camera appears as an unknown device with a yellow question mark over the icon. When i click on properties i get the "code 28 - the drivers for this device are not installed" message.
To remedy this problem i bought a memory card and a reader thinking this would work but I have exactly the same problem with this device.
I`m thinking it`s a problem with windows drivers rather than both devices, and I can`t find any info on this type of problem on the microsoft site.

    PLEASE HELP!!!!
    thanks
    Neil

Hi nellyeff and welcome to the forum.

It could be a power problem. The new camera may want more juice than the old one or other USB devices do.

Depending on the age of your PC, you may have a pair of USB ports on the case front and a pair on the case rear. For some reason that I totally fail to understand, it is common to have either front or rear set have more power supplied to them so that moving the attachment from one set to another will cure the problem.

An external USB port expander with it's own power supply (plugs into the wall) will do too if you have one.

If the above isn't the issue, check your event logs for errors/warnings with more detail.

Hi Newt, thanx for the welcome.
I`ve tried all the USB ports on my pooter and they`re all the same.
I`ve since tried both the camera and the card reader on my daughter`s pooter, also XP with SP1 and no internet connection and they both work fine.
I tried copying the driver files which were running the devices on her system to a floppy and putting them in the C:\WINDOWS\System32\DRIVERS (??) folder on my system. still no luck!
The driver was - file version 5.1.2600.1106 and about 22kb in size.
I done a search on my system and this file wasn`t found so I thought i`d cracked it........
Also tried uninstalling SP2, but no success there either.

When i plug any of the devices in I get 3 quick "bong bong bong" sounds....
In device manager the card reader is detected as a "USBHS Orca 8 in 1 card reader" but has a yellow question mark on top of the icon.

I`m thinking of going back to 35mm film.......... :D

    problem solved

:) Solved this problem folks. My pooter now recognises the USB card reader.
I downloaded a patch from the Packard Bell Europe support site which addresses the "USB device not detected" problem.
Obviously this will only work with a PB computer but if your having this problem it might be worth a try.
