For previous threads concerning "setting up new Hp computer for relatives" see ..

    Hi folks
We'll guess what ... It's been 5 days since I left the inlaws with a cleaned up computer, secured to safely browse the internet. They just called and cannot get on internet. Asked what message(s) were being displayed to the screen. Response ... "Can't find modem or busy ".
Hmmm .. Asked if they had installed or un-installed any programs. Said they tried to install a old CD game program yesterday, but it would not install. Ok, I replied, lets go into device manager and check the status of the modem. Lead my mother inlaw to the correct screen. Her screen and mine read identical until mine listed modem, hers displayed Mice, then Monitor, NO Modem listed in device manager. Now I assume her modem is built into the motherboard. How does one go about getting XP to "rediscover" a built in modem? With modem not being displayed in device manager imply a dead modem? Does this require a new motherboard?
Isn't it fun fixing, maintaining computers for relatives.
    Thanks for any assistance.

    Hi Dennis
I had this problem with my old HP (windows 98). I had to shut down the computer. (Not reboot) Shut down wait for about a min. and then restart.
The computer then found "New Hardware" the modem.
Which the wizard then lead me through installing.

Don't know if XP is the same but you can thy this.
Did you ever get a "Belarc adviser or Everest print out of what is on the computer? or do you know what modem was installed (Description, name )

    Thanks Geri

No I did not install "Everest" on their computer. But what I did do before I left was export / email to myself all 4 text file reports generated via MSinfo\msinfo32.exe ... this is one of the modem outputs via Hardware listing report.

IRQ 18 Agere Systems PCI Soft Modem OK

This is interesting, could this be a removable PCI card??

    Dennis,
They may need to physically remove the PCI modem. Restart the PC, then shutdown and install it again. It should be detected. I would also update with the latest Agere driver as well. If the modem isn't found, still run the driver update. The modem may be "found" during the driver install.

Failing this they may have a com port problem, either in windows or in BIOS?

    Thanks Paul

Just surprised to see a PCI card in a Hp computer verse cost savings with on-board modem. Before we crack the computer open, should I have my inlaws look for a "Warranty Seal "? Don't want to jeopardize losing warranty coverage on a one month old computer.

    Hi Dennis
If the computer is under warranty, then I would have HP deal with this.

I have found that they do try to be helpful, I would have them call them before doing anything themselves.

if you look in the device manager is there a yellow mark somewhere? maybe the driver needs to be reinstalled. I find winmodems are not as good as hardware modems.
