    Can't make dial up connection

Happy New Year to all at Windows BBS! Got a new (secondhand) Compaq laptop for Xmas with Win XP loaded and not a lot else so I wanted to install Spybot, Adaware and AVG before I started loading my other progs. I have however hit a bit of a brickwall.
Went to ‘create a new connection’ selected ‘connect to internet’ then selected ‘set up connection manually’. Next window has options
    1) connect with Dial up modem
2)connect using broad band (password and)
    3) broadband always on.
I need the first item but the first two items are greyed out so I am unable to select item 1) which I require.
The modem is installed and responds to query and there is no local network set up.
I have set up many dial up connections in win 98 and XP and never encountered this problem, any suggestions on how to proceed?

Do you have a dialup modem installed? If there is one, look in Control Panel>System>Hardware tab>Device Manager button to see if it's being recognized. If it's listed under Modems but there's a yellow warning mark next to it, its drivers are either not installed or not working and need to be reinstalled.

    cant dial up

    Hi Miz

Thanks for your assistance. The modem worked previously before running virus and malware progs. Recognised by device manager and under Query Modem, gives the right responses. So. it appears that the modem works OK but I just cannot set up a connection.
Qnything else to try] %**** french keyboard- or should I give up and reforl;at the HD. question mark

I'm all out of ideas. The registry edits in the Microsoft article have always fixed the problem when I've encountered it.

Hopefully somebody else will come along with another suggestion.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

When that samething happened to me I did a repair install of winxp and that corrected the problem.

Boot off the windows xp cd and at the first prompt hit enter then at the second prompt hit "R" for repair.

I've heard of other people having trouble by doing this and losing data but that has never happened to me yet :)

Still I keep a backup image file and also I backup all my data to a 2nd hard drive just in case.

    Good Luck

If nothing else has worked try going to the run box and type inetwiz then OK . Set up the new connection there. I had problems using the conventional network wizard years ago and was told to do that and it worked!!
I knew it was a good modem and all I wanted was a new connection.

    cant dial up

Hi Rockit . tried that but after pressing the R it asks for password and it does not recognise any of the passwords that i use so i can go no further.

Maggie I thought we had it there ,Inetwiz looked great and seemed to be doing the job but when it qsked for a name for the connection it would not accept any combination of letters, numbers or spaces just says , must not start with a period or a spqce/, forgive spelling, not me but new french keyboqrd,
getting q bit frustrqted here 8 wonder if thats why I got it qs a present question mark

I wish everyone I happier New Year with their PCs than Im having so far

    bg9208,
Not positive but I think if it's asking for the password you haven't gone far enough. You don't want to use the recovery option. You need to hit enter there then at the next screen where it say's "repair" hit "R "

    Good Luck

Looks like the keyboard might be the problem. Go to Regional and Languages in control panel and also check the Keyboard. Is it USB or PS2? That might not be an issue. I use both but do I have an adapter to change USB to PS2.
Here is a link to some problems with keyboards and different languages http://www.vonscheven.net/AAAEnglishKeyboard.asp

    Back to a yet unresolved problem. Unable to set up an internet connection on my Compaq Presario 2100. The New Connection Wizard gets as far as the “how do you want to connect” page (I want dial up modem) but everything with the exception of Broadband connection is greyed out. I have tried the suggestion of using Inetwiz but this will not accept any name I put in for the connection gives the message “name cannot start with a period and can not include a space. All I tried were within these parameters but I still get the same message. The modem does respond OK on test and there are no IRQ conflicts. I have even re=installed the OS Win XP Pro but the problem is still there;
Now at a total loss as something in the system seems determined that I shall not connect with the outside world.
Any further suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I was doing some searching on this at Google and came across your other post here about this and see you've already tried that. It's really best for you to stick with that thread. It'll avoid a lot duplicate advice. Please post back to that one and let them know that the problem isn't fixed yet. Much better that way. In case you weren't able to find the thread, you will find it here.

    http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=39070

If you do have problems finding a previous thread that you posted in there's several ways you can go about it. If you click on the the "quick links" link toward the upper right of this page you'll see a link that says subscribed threads. These are threads that you've posted in and somebody else has posted something new to since you last visited. If nothing's been posted to the thread since you last visited it won't show up there. So, if that's the case you can click on the on the user control panel link in the quick links and on the page that opens look at the left side of the page. You'll see a section that says subscribed threads. Click on the link that says list subscriptions. That should give you a list of all the threads you've posted to in the past unless you've unsubscribed from them. Oh, one more way. You can click on your name next to any of your posts and choose "find more posts by bg9208 ". That'll get ya there too.

I'll do some more searching on this and see what I can find. A quick glance at what I came up with while searching tells me it's probably a toughy. Hopefully we can come up with something for you. :)

    dial up problem

Followed the MS instruction for removing the "˜cards’ entry in the registry,
Tried the "Repair" option to try and resolve this problem but, whatever I do, I seems that every option leads into a dead end

After booting to the XP CD and getting to and pressing "˜R’ for repair option, I get the following message:

    Type exit to quit
    1: c:\windows
Which Win Install would you like to log on to (to cancel press ENTER)?

Obviously not Exit "“ Enter just closes down so typed 1 then enter.
    Message:" Type the Administrator passwordâ€
I have not assigned a password to "Administrator" so I just clicked enter
    Message "password not validâ€
Whatever I enter "“ The same message!!!!!!

Even a complete re-installation of XP doesn’t seem to do the job

Any lasts suggestions before I do what the guy in the TV ad suggests and âœRip out the Hard Driveâ€?

If you are not bothered about what is on the laptop a format and reinstall would be an option, but before you action this go to the Compaq website and download all the necessary drivers for your model - chipset, video, modem, etc and burn to CD.

Then, as you already have an installation of XP on the drive, follow these instructions - some of the dialogue is from the setup screens you will see ....

Check in your BIOS that the boot order is set CD/Floppy/HD

Boot from the Windows CD "“ follow the on screen prompts "¦..

To set up Windows XP now press ENTER

    Accept the Licence Agreement F8

Searching for previous versions of Windows

To continue installing a fresh copy of Windows without repairing press ESC

Ensure that the drive/partition selected is the one on which XP was set up and press D to delete the selected partition.

To delete the partition press ENTER

To delete the partition press L "“ heed the warnings and DOUBLE CHECK before hitting L

To create a partition in the unpartitioned space press C

Accept max size and press ENTER

To set up Windows XP on the selected item (Partition (New Raw)) press ENTER
Format the partition using the NTFS file system "“ preferred unless you want an install of Win 98 to access data on the drive/partition, if so choose FAT.

    Set up is formatting "¦â€¦

When format is complete XP will install.

You will then need to install any Compaq specific drivers.

Sorry, missed that. Did you format?
