    Hey,
I tried to install a v92 soft modem in my computer and it wouldn't work at all. I messed with it for awhile and finally uninstalled it and put the old modem back in.
After this I noticed I had no longer had listing for com or LPT ports in device manager ..
Now my printer won't work and I get this error in the event viewer:

    Event Type: Error
    Event Source: Print
    Event Category: None
    Event ID: 6161
    Date: 12/31/2004
    Time: 8:51:36 PM
    User: COMPUTER\David
    Computer: COMPUTER
    Description:
The document EditPad Classic - C:\RegRepair.txt owned by David failed to print on printer HP DeskJet 660C. Data type: NT EMF 1.008. Size of the spool file in bytes: 2120. Number of bytes printed: 0. Total number of pages in the document: 1. Number of pages printed: 0. Client machine: \\COMPUTER. Win32 error code returned by the print processor: 2 (0x2).

Any Idea's on how to correct this?
    Thanks and Happy New Year

A good starting point would be to run System File Checker ....

Start > Run > type in sfc /scannow - note the space and have your XP install CD handy.

If you have not run System File Checker before note that it will run and exit with no concluding dialogue. to see which files, if any have been replaced look in Event Viewer.

    Pete,
I ran sfc /scannow and still no ports show up in the device manager and the printer will not install auto or manually. This is strange and all started after installing and uninstalling the V92 modem? Any other Idea's?

    Thanks
    Rockit

Take a look in the BIOS and check that they have not been disabled.
