Whenever I boot up my PC (win 98se), Pentium III, 500 mghz, 256k Ram, the following message shows up "Windows cannot display the settings you chose ". This happens no matter whatever I set it to: hi 16 bit color or 256 color or whatever. set to 800X600 but same with other settings.

We have 3 Gateway PCs with same driver , operating systems and Monitors. Only the one PC has this problem. I can run most things alright but need to set the proper settings for my photo programs.

Sounds like windows isn't using the drivers for the graphics card, and therefore is only displaying 16 colours. This is the default below 256 colours. First thing I'd do is check that the monitor refresh rate is set correctly in the display properties. depending on the age of the monitor and the graphics card, the monitor may not like a refresh rate at the ideal 85Hz. Try a refresh rate of 75 or 72Hz. Make sure the monitor is correctly detected. Not just as a standard or plug and play monitor. Recheck the type of graphics card in this problematic system and then check for a later driver for it.
Monitor refresh rate settings probably won't be adjustable till using an appropriate graphics driver and/or the monitor brand and model is correctly detected. The monitor's web site may have a newer monitor INF driver. Windows update may have one as well?
