I have XP Pro with MS wireless keyboard and mouse. Each time I restart the computer the keyboard and mouse stop working . I have to restart several times and plug and unplug the reciever before it finally responds and then operates without fault until it is shutdown again. I have tried a standard ps2 mouse with the same result. This configuration has been operating for 18 months without problems, can you help?

Welcome to the BBS tone! :)
First thing I would do is download the latest drivers/software for the keyboard and mouse from the MS hardware download site.
Then I'd uninstall any existing software. The mouse and KB should still work? Then from the device manager uninstall first the keyboard, then the mouse. You may loose "mousability" after clicking on the mouse uninstall, or it may still work allowing you an "orderly" shutdown/restart. If not, just do a hard reset from the reset switch. Do that and let windows redetect both, when they are working fine, install the KB software first that you downloaded, then the mouse software.

Keyboard and Mouse are two thing that I would suggest not being USB or Wireless. Neither one is available if the machine needs to be booted from the floppy or CD.

If the newer stuff if different I do not know. But to cover my backside I have both a PS2 and a USB Mouse. And a PS2 keyboard. But the USB is only available AFTER Windows Loads. And if it does not load I stll have the PS2.

    Keyboard and mouse malfunction

Thanxs for the advice, I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the keyboard and mouse drivers but this did not work and came to the conclusion that possibly the ps2 sockets are faulty or the soldering on the motherboard is suspect so I bought an adapter from jaycar, ps2 to usb.The computer recognised the hardware and my problem has disappeared.
