I purchased Win XP upgrade and installed it on my machine which was running 98 SE, I got the verification code and it was a good install. I have since given this computer to my son. Can I use the same upgrade software to upgrade my new (second hand) computer which also has Win 98 SE.
I still have the verification code I used on the first machine?

Not legally and there would be no way to register the 2nd install so you would have troubles like no service packs, ever, and some other odds and ends.

Thanks Newt, so I have to buy an upgrade pack for each machine? What about if I have to do a reformat on my original machine, will it let me reinstall?

I would think that the verification code is somehow tied to the other machine and it's hardware. My guess is that if you use it WPA will kick in and you'll be locked out. I admit that I don't know all that much about how WPA works but I really doubt that MS would make it that easy. I wouldn't try it but it's your call.

I think you misunderstand the second part of my question.
If I want to do a format on the machine that I first did the upgrade on and got the verification code for, Will it let me reinstal on that machine?

If you are taking it off the first machine, you can get a new activation code for the second machine.

Yea, I'm also not 100% sure what he means.

If he puts it on a 2nd machine, then the question: If I want to do a format on the machine that I first did the upgrade on and got the verification code for, Will it let me reinstal on that machine? would be answered:

Yes you can install, and NO it won't let you activate.
