xp/sp2 update error

    good day folks. i am having an update error. i am running xp/sp2 and when i go to the update site, i can download the updates and they seem slow, but after the download, the install fails. i get the following error with no explanation,
    ( Error Code: 80246008 ). i searched microsoft's site and some others, but to no avail. any help would be appreciated. thanks, les :)

    There should be lots more detail in your event logs.

    "The necessary services are disabled or unavailable. Error 0x80246008

    Problem description

    This error may occur if one or more of the following services are disabled or unavailable. Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) Event Log

    Applicable operating systems


    Windows 2000

    Windows XP

    Windows Server 2003



    Resolutions
    1. Set Background Intelligent Transfer Service to Automatic and verify the Status is Started.
    Click Start.
    Choose Run.
    In the Run box, type services.msc.
    Click OK.
    Find the Background Intelligent Transfer Service service, and right-click to select it.
    Select Properties.
    In the Startup Type list, select Automatic.
    Verify the service Status is Started.
    Click OK.

    2. Set Event Log service to Automatic and verify that the Status is Started
    Click Start.
    Choose Run.
    In the Run box, type services.msc.
    Click OK.
    Find the Event Log service, and right-click to select it.
    Select Properties.
    In the Startup type list, select Automatic.
    Verify the Service status is Started.
    Click OK.

    Register qmgr.dll
    Click Start.
    Choose Run.
    In the Run box, type regsvr32 qmgr.dll.
    Click OK.


    Register qmgrproxy.dll
    Click Start.
    Choose Run.
    In the Run box, type regsvr32 qmgrproxy.dll.
    Click OK. "
