No need to panic extreme. In the worst case scenario, you will need to reinstall windows and your programs. Your data is safe and will survive.

Can you get us the exact verbage of the error message.
If you come up in safe mode (F8 on boot) can you login?

    the popup shown was

    Logon error

the server could not log you in due to the following errors:

the program issued a command but the command length is incorrect.

pls try again or consult your system adminstrator.

i tried safe mode and it shows the same error also.

Ok, first thing to try is Last Known Good. This is selected from the same F8 menu as safe mode.

If that lets you in, you should go to windows update and manually download and install all critical updates availible. You could be running into a problem with a bad download of the security patch MS04-044. Doing it manually should get you back on track. Let us know

I am having basicly the same problem although I have never used passwords. We have used this laptop with WindowsXP sp1 for about a year and it has never asked for a password. Today it did and nothing I have tried will let me get past the password. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

earcorn, have you tried what Ben offered yet?

Some Windows Updates substitute their own password for yours in order to accomplish their work. If they don't complete properly, you're left with a problem. If the Last Known Good boot method doesn't work, try booting to Safe Mode with Network Support. If you can get in that way, check the Windows Updater site and reinstall what is offered in hopes of fixing the flawed one and removing the curse.

If that fails, there is a way to reset your password but you'll have to do a Google for it unless someone happens along that has it bookmarked.

    Arie, Perhaps you misunderstand.

I fail to see how advising a user on how to reset "his" password after it becomes hosed due to an incomplete update or hotfix would be breaking any rules. It is merely returning the system to the condition it was before the error occurred and the password that was in use when the download was initiated would be returned. The user would still need to know what his password was to gain access. Presumably he did know the password and wasn't trying to crack the system - just trying to make it function once more with his password.

The full information on how to do this has been available on Kelly Theriot's site for quite some time. I think MS must also have such info available as well.

BTW, If you have GoBack, you can return the system to the state that it was prior to the flawed download and your password will become functional once more.

Yes, I have tried Ben's suggestion and that didn't work and neither did the networking.

Well...If you haven't created a "Password Reset" diskette as MicroSoft advises, and if you have no backups that predate the problem, you're pretty much up the proverbial creek. It will probably take a clean install to get this problem cleared.

I have never tried doing a parallel install to recover data under these circumstances nor have I tried imaging an unaccessible drive with hopes of saving personal data. I can't say that either method would work but just thinking out loud. A parallel install would at least get you back into the Windows environment and perhaps make troubleshooting easier. You might then be able to access the Windows Update site and get the flawed download to complete, which MIGHT restore your password functionality. This is all guesswork so take it for what it may be worth.

    Good luck.

    Earcorn,
Do you have XP Home or Pro? Can you log into the admin account? (Try two taps Control-Alt-Delete at the Welcome Screen) By default, the XP Home password is blank. If you set up an Admin password for Home or Pro, and you can use it to get into Admin mode, you should be able to put things right for your profile in Control Panel, User Accounts.

Thanks Johanna! That's what I was trying to recall. I knew it had something to do with the Admin. account password being blank by default. I have seen that posted here before and just couldn't bring it up.

Now I can sleep without all those gears grinding away up there in my peanut brain. :D

The laptop is running XP sp1 home. No, I can't logon to the admin account. I have never set up a password and the two taps control-alt-delete didn't work either. I was trying to think if I had installed anything new in the last few days then I remembered that day before yesterday we installed the newest version of AOL instant messenger. I don't remember what the version number was though. It shut done fine that night but yesterday morning when we turned it on, the problem started. Could it be AOL causing the problem? The logon error message I keep getting is "The local policy of the system does not permit you to logon interactively ". Thanks for your input.

If you can't get on as Administrator (or possibly another account with admin rights which would work on XP-pro but I'm not sure about XP-home) you are pretty much dead and are looking at a reinstall.

Try booting to safe mode (most systems you simply start tapping F8 while it starts and get a menu offering options). The administrator account icon will show up then and if it was never passworded, you can just click it and be in. Since XP-home hides most security stuff in normal mode, you'd need to log on after a safe-mode boot anyway.

If you get that far, post back and we'll give you some specific instructions for finding the cause and effecting a cure.
