I found a program a while ago that's supposed to alphabetize Bookmarks in FF (http://mbs.mozdev.org/installation.html#windows). I'm not having any luck with it, and I'm hoping someone might be able to steer me in the right direction.
First off, it says to click on Tools in Bookmark Manager, and there's no such option for me. If I click on File, I can get the export option to come up -- so I've tried using that instead. It seems like I'm able to save the bookmarks file the way I'm supposed to. I can even get MBS to run as it's supposed to, BUT when I get to the final instructions to go back to the Mozilla "Bookmark Manager" window and click the "Edit" menu and select "Select All ", then click the "Edit" menu again and select "Delete ", the Delete option is grayed out for me.
Is anyone familiar with this problem, and if so, do you have a solution I might try?
Thanks,
Rebecca

Hey Long Lake,

You're supposed to be out celebrating Christmas with the polar bears, not asking questions on the BBS. :)

I can't imagine why anyone would want his/her bookmarks alphabetized ... mostly, I suppose, because all of mine are organized into folders, with those used most often towards the top of the list.

I'm not familiar with the program your link takes me to, but I have another option for you ... if you open Bookmarks Manager > View, you'll find all sorts of ways to sort your bookmarks, including A > Z (or Z > A, if you're so inclined).

Merry Christmas, Rebecca!

And a very merry Christmas to you too, Jim!
We started out at -40F this morning, and got up to a high of -22F -- which is the main reason I spent so much time on the computer today. At least we're having a totally WHITE Christmas! How about you?
Rebecca
Incidentally, I have most of my bookmarks in folders & subfolders too. It's just that I always have some stragglers that seem to miss the boat... for instance, in my "computer reference" folder, I have a number of subfolders. The one I use most is one called "tech help ", but by virtue of its name, it shows up toward the end of all my listings (both subfolders and individual "loose" bookmarks within the folder). I tried renaming it "a tech help ", figuring that would move it up to the top of the alphabetical list within my "Computer reference" folder, but no go: I still have to scroll way down in the folder to find my "a tech help" subfolder. The real problem is probably that I just have too many bookmarks...

Rebecca, where do you live, near Baffin Bay? Never mind.
I can answer you very simply. You mention FF, which in my book stands for Firefox. I checked your linked, and I could not see a thing about that the extention could be used with Firefox ( and, never mind if they try to cfuse people by referring to Mozilla Firefox). In several places, I saw only Mozilla mentioned. Yes, Firefox is mentioned at the beginning, but nowhere else.
since this is a very obscure extention, it would be best if you handles this outside of the newsgroup. I sent a feedback directly to the author.

No snow here in at least five weeks, and it is great without it.

Westside, thanks for the heads up on the Firefox/ Mozilla Firefox bit, as well as for sending feedback to the author. I'll let sleeping dogs lie with respect to the program for now!
Nope, nowhere near Baffin Bay, although you wouldn't know that by our temps the last 3 days! I'm about 6-7 hours north of Duluth. Only about a foot of snow on the ground here - too cold to snow these days!
:)

Hi Rebecca,

No white Christmas here, but "the night after Christmas" (meaning the 26th-27th) will be white.

I should have taken my explanation a bit further, I suppose, but you seemed intent on alphabetizing, so I didn't say anything more.

Once you open the Bookmarks Manager (Bookmarks > Manage Bookmarks...) you can organize your bookmarks in any number of ways, but dragging and dropping is the easiest way to customize. Just click on the + sign beside your computer reference folder to expand it, then drag your tech help folder to the top of the list. Individual bookmarks are handled the same way.

Good luck. If you have any further problems/questions, just post back.

THANKS, Jim! That's exactly what I wanted to do. I thought I'd tried dragging things to re-locate them, but I must've been in actual Bookmarks, not in Bookmark Manager, because it didn't work as I'd hopes. My alphabetization plan had been to rename subfolders so that their names started with various letters of the alphabet, with those subfolders I use most often at the top. Thus, "a tech help ", "b mozilla/firefox info ", "c security info sites ", etc. So the alphabetization scheme would've been a round-about way to accomplish what you instructed me to do in a more straighforward way!
My bookmarks are in perfect order now!
PS - we're up to -30F this morning! :)

Now, I understand, and, whatever you do makes makes sense. Otherwise, to alphabetize, let's say 1000 of them makes no more sense than leaving them where there are. I, personally, have organized all my bookmarks into folders, and have the folders my Personal Toolbar. And, I rename all bookmarks with wordy titles to something which makes sense to me. I have 17 folders in the toolbar, with abbreviated, but understandable names. I can fit more folders that way, Netscp, Mzilla,, Wthr etc.

I seldom open the bookmark manager. I right click and choose sort by name in the context menu just like Internet Explorer.

Another country heard from....

Hi Bill -
I'm able to find the Sort by Name when I right-click in Bookmarks, but I can't tell that it's doing anything! Would you give me an example of how the command changes something?
Thanks!

Hi Rebecca..

If all your bookmarks are in order, it doesn't look like anything is happening. If you drag one out of order, you can see it put back in alpha order.

For instance; I have a folder labeled "Daily ". In it are four bookmarks. I can drag one of the bookmarks to another position then right click any one of them and select "sort by name" and they go back to alpha order.

I can drag a bookmark out of one folder and into another then rt click and sort there.

The only thing cumbersome about it is the bookmarks list closes as soon as you sort. Internet Explorer favorites stays open until you are finished.

It's shut down time---see you tomorrow. :)
