am thinking about building a system with the amd 64 in it. have very little experience with amd other than repairing machine with the athlon inside.

from what i see there are 2 types of sockets for the 64bit - 754 and 939. so first question is which one should i use ???

is this a good way to go or better to stick with high end athlon and not go 64bit ???

    any opinions would be helpful.

    thanks.

I have yet to do a 64bit Athlon but have been giving it serious consideration for quite some time. 939 is the newer socket and most of the newer 64's with the exception of the 53 have a 512K cache. Personally, my thinking has been to focus on a 1MB cache which means looking at a 754 because there's no way I'm going to pay $700+ for a 1MB 939 CPU. I'm still in a wait-see posture but my curiousity make take soon take control over rational thinking.

Now - as to practical matters - my all time favorite Athlon is currently the 2600+ mobile. Its rated to run on a 266MHZ bus, but with a decent MoBo and good memory, this chip runs on a 400MHZ bus with ease. I'm running a couple of these now at 12x200 which is better than a 3200+ (11x200) and because the chip was designed to run with a lower core voltage than normal K7's, it runs very cool. I can run stable at (12.5x210) but have backed both systems down to 12x200). DFI dual channel MoBo's, one with Corsair XMS and one with OCZ. These benchmark almost on par with Athlon 64's and better than most any P4 until you come up against RDRAM Rambus memory systems. Have also had very good results with this CPU on Abit boards running at 12x200 easy and have built a few of these for clients using standard Samsung PC3200 modules in dual channel configuration.

Keep me posted on what you do as I'll be following with interest - going to do one soon but haven't crossed the threshold yet.

    ;)

I have been doing some thinking on the Athlon 64 as well. I came to the conclusion that the A8N-SLI would be a better choice:

2 more SATA connectors and it supports the next generation 3.0 GB/s specs.

Two graphic cards possible for better (extreme?) video performance.

However, my main reason is that I don't want a VIA chipset. They seem to have an issue running under DOS. I'm a Ghost user and the transfer rates to a FAT32 partition are very low.
(I know that this chipset is different than the older VIA's but I would rather try something else. VIA doesn't even respond to e-mails.)

There is also an A8N-SLI Deluxe.

below this link was the main reason why i was going for that particular board. its one of tigers barebone systems.

    http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1133509&Tab=2&NoMapp=0

you mentioned having more sata connectors the one mentioned here has 2 i believe so am not sure why more than 2 would be needed.

i am surprised that via hasnt returned your emails theyve been around a long time. i to use ghost but have the new version 9 that lets you do everything within windows and it seems to work fine. used to use the dos versions of ghost but got away from it for a long time so forgot how. getting old i guess.

have built a barebones using tiger before and it came out pretty decent. in fact its my main machine now. its an intel 3.2ghz with 800fsb, 256mb ati 9600xt graphics, 200g w.d. hard drive, 8x dvd +/- burner, 512mb micron memory module going to go up to 1g shortly, 460w enermax psu.

one problem i do have with it every few days and that is that it just reboots itself. sometimes it happens first in the morning when i turn it on sometimes when on the web no consistancy and no reason why. have run diags on it and all past fine. boots right back up with no errors on anything of a problem. cant figure it out though but because of it doing this wont be able to sell it so will keep it for myself.

I wouldn't need more than two either but RAID fanatics would go ballistic over the A8N-SLI Deluxe which has 4 + 4 SATA on two controllers and double RAID.

Harddisks complying to the 3.0 GB/s SATA specs (SATA II) is what I'm waiting for. From what I've read, there will be a more significant increase in performance in the second generation SATAs.

Ghost "classic ", running from a Ghost Boot Disk does everything I ask of it and has never let me down. As long as it works ...... ...... I won't fix it!

    Christer

By the way, good deal on that Barebone Kit! Will we ever see anything like that in Sweden ...... :( ...... ?

Am always amazed at where some of the people who look at this forum are from. Me Swed also half of me anyway. Have relatives in I believe stockhom. Distant cousins on my moms side. Very rich from what I've been told. Unlike me a working guy.

Cant you get these systems over there ??? Or are we unable to ship technology oversees ???

Sorta thought the system looked good and with a few more bucks can be a really nice system for me or some gamer.

Hope you had a good xmas and thanks....Greg

    Greg,

I haven't seen that specific motherboard listed for sale anywhere in Sweden, yet but eventually it will be available. We can get everything here but the price is much higher.

It was nice and quiet, only me and my parents. Hope Yours was oK too!

    Hello All,

I noticed you are all talking about the Asus A8N Delux mobo and I just purchased one and bought a 939 Athlon 64 4000+ to drop in it along with OCZ Enhanced latency Series Platinum PC3200 DDR 400 ram (1 gig to start with) I think they will all compliment each other nicely.

Yes I dropped a bunch on the cpu and as Rockster said.. theres no way im going to pay 700+ dollars on a 1 mb 939 cpu, but I decided what the heck... my christmas present to me :D had all my stuff shipped overnight will drop a line and let you know how it all goes together if your interested..... hope you all had a great X mas :D

    Hello FireDancer,
I read the other thread too but for once ...... ...... I didn't butt in!

I'm very interested in hearing about Your experiences. One starter question:

Why did You choose the A8N-SLI Deluxe and not the A8N-SLI?
It seems to me like the A8N-SLI is what a "normal" computer needs but the A8N-SLI Deluxe is more for a computer which is to be used as a "hub" in a network - dual LAN and dual RAID for shared storage and stuff like that.

Am I totally off the mark?

i would also be interested in how it goes together. like christer said are you using this machine in a network ??? doesnt seem like one for even a gamer because of the dual lan and raid.

am going to buy the one i posted the link on. should make a gamer a very happy gamer with 1g of ram, a 256mb graphics card and 160g h.d. and a 16x double layer lite-on burner.

I do have a small buisness and have 4 other machines that would network but now tat you have brought it up, I have used them all as stand alones. This machine will be used for many things as well as my buisness but not being to hardware savy I could use some recommendations. After reading your post posing that question to me I went back and looked over my shopping list. I still want the 4000+ although it seems that I need to do some more reading on SATA and Raid as I am not familiar with them

Was just planing on going with plain ol IDE. Advice???? Thanks guys for pointing that out.

even though the asus a8v deluxe has sata capability i also am sticking to ide right now. reason is because i have a couple western digital drives 160g that i want to get out of inventory otherwise i would go to sata. sata is just the new technology in hard drives. raid if i remember stands for reduntant array of inexpensive drives. something like that normally used i believe for disaster recovery situations.

    gghartman,

    Yes,

I also have 2 brand new WD HDD , a 80 gig and a 120 gig I want to use and both are 7200 rpm.. so there nice and will be put to good use. Allthough I am still stuck with what board to use... I guess I could go either way but feel the delux is not needed at this time. :)

    Guys,
I did some testing, using AIDA 32, on a friends computer which has two 160 GB Seagate 7200.7, one SATA (yellow in the screenshots) and one PATA (green in the screenshots), both 8 MB cache. The numerical values are for the SATA.

There are differences but as You can see, Buffered Read is well below ATA100 limits and the fact that the SATA has a better Average Access (seek time including latency) has nothing to do with the interface.

    About RAID, well, I don't indulge myself with that but as I understand it;

    - mirroring is writing the same information two both drives (protection against hardware failure)

    - striping is writing to both drives simultaneously (don't know exactly how but it makes the combination faster)

    - both (which probably is why there are 4 + 4 SATA connectors on the A8N-SLI Deluxe

RAID does not protect against software failure or virus/malware, You'll still need an Image.

    Christer
