I don't have any hijack issues (that I know of) but there are two entries in Spybot S&D's System Startup list that I have questions about. I attached images of the lines from SS&D's display.

    1st:
The first line in the SS&D list is simply HK_LM:Run with no "Value" and no "Command line" entries.
    Is this normal?

    2nd:
A line refers to HK_LM:Run, SunJavaUpdateSched
    command: C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_01\bin\jusched.exe
    file: C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_01\bin\jusched.exe
    size: 36975
    MD5: 70de314a16e5a486a0ef2425014685b2

I think I have seen a post where Dave told someone to "fix" a 04...jusched.exe via their HJT.

Am I safe to "fix" (remove) this particular entry via HJT v1.99? ...
If so, should I perform the "fix" in safe mode or may I just do it in normal mode?

I don't really care to have the JRE automatically check for updates (if that's what jusched.exe does).

That's exactly what it does and it can be turned off. Start > Control panel > Java Plug-in > Updates > Uncheck and it will most likely disappear from SpyBot.

Thanks, Christer. Worked exactly as you said.

I thought of one more tiny question and one wordy request. :)

    Tiny Question:
If I had HJT remove the registry entry instead of going through the Java plugin, would that possibly lead to problems?

Seems the autoupdate function would still be enabled in the Java plug-in but the registry would confuse the plugin...leading to instability.

    Wordy Request:
I'm trying to begin to understand how the registry works. I have found the following source of info by searching the MS Knowlege Base at http://search.support.microsoft.com/kb/c.asp
for the phrase "how the registry works ".

    Controlling the User: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/archive/winntas/maintain/control.mspx

Even though I suspect most sources of information about the registry are technical, at least I can study the vocabulary used and go from there.

If anyone immediately knows of other tutorials or textbooks (perhaps ones that worked well for you) that explain the registry in layman -> technical terms, please point me to them. I have very limited programming experience (a little Pascal, Fortran, and assembly language in college 20 years ago) but desire to find a good starting point and strategy for learning. I especially like to experiment.

I'm thinking of purchasing Win XP Pro for my laptop (currently Windows ME) and doing a format/clean install since the data contained on it is not critical to keep. I'll make the laptop my experimental machine so, if I muck it up, I can just do another clean install, parallel install, dual boot or whatever else I want to try.

I really don't know but I believe that it would cause an isolated problem in the java applet. Compare that registry key with java auto-update enabled and disabled. That may give a clue.

I haven't read more than You have but I have "insurance" in the form of a Ghost Image of my system. If my fat fingers should slip in the registry ...... ...... I have the aid in my drawer, the Ghost Boot Disks!

If You set up the LapTop for experimentation, I recommend to partition and backup using Ghost. It gives a boost to ones self confidence!

Thanks again for the suggestions, Christer. That's what I'll do. Haven't messed much with Ghost yet but that's the reason I went with the NSW Pro/Premier versions. I just hadn't scraped up the courage to fully experiment and it looks like the lap top idea is the ticket.

I too had an old LapTop for experimenting. Two partitions with an image of the first created to the second. It was a HP OmniBook, 133 MHz Pentium with 64 MB RAM ...... ...... I had time to reflect upon my misdeeds!

Ouch! You had plenty of time. :) We've come a LONG way since 133 Mhz.

    BTW...
I just found an answer the other question in my original post (quoted above) at http://castlecops.com/postt80787.html

Looks like I might have to fiddle a little with the registry with this machine too.

    Nice catch ...... :) ...... !

A program uninstall often leaves empty folders and it seems like it may leave empty registry entries as well.
