I installed an EPOX EP8K7A MoBo, used, From Ebay, and have it running well. I installed my Win98 upgrade over `95 and except for the following problem everything is working, so far. When running the VIA Driver installation CD I get an error message when trying to install a couple of the drivers "Cannot find C:\Win. \Sys\ sucatreg.exe. I evidently need some upgrade that the original `98 doesn`t have?

From all my searching and reading it appears the only way to acqire what I need is to purchase a Win 98`to `98se upgrade disk from Ebay. Is this the correct way to go?

    Thanks, Jake
I thought MS had made an orphan out of `98.Soon as I get some coffee down and start functioning near normal I`ll see what I can find.
    Really appreciate the come back!

    One More Question

Found the site , it works fine. If I download all the updates offered there will my old`98 be the equivalent of the `98SE? I know I`m living in the past but I`m in familiar territory with this OS. Thanks again

    Howdy ...and Merry Christmas...

In answer to your question, that is the way it was billed. If you download and installed the various ones listed as "part of the service pack" you should end up with a Windows 98 Machine upgraded to SE.... it went smoothly on the machines I've worked on around here...

    Cheers

    Microsoft Windows 98 4.10.1998
    Mother Board Epox EP-8K7A
    Motherboard Chipset AMD760
CPU Type AMD Athlon XP, 1100 MHz
    Award Modular BIOS v6.00P
    256 RAM

I may be chasing a ghost. I downloaded everything I could get my hands on from the MS 98 update site and I still get the "cannot find sucatreg.exe " This shows up when I`m attempting to install an AMD miniport driver from the CD that came with the hard drive that I changed out, It was an Epox 8K7A+. This one is an 8K7A.
The CD says it`s a VIA series driver installation disk, so I think it should work.I get the same sucatreg error when attempting to install the AGP driver from the eVGA display driver CD.
Also, to run all the help off!, I get The Error on boot that the PCI System Management Bus wants a driver that isn`t there. I`ve got a feeling these are all connected, somehow, but after downloading some, what looked to me to be promising fixes, from the AMD support, and having them not be the proper ones I`m at a loss as to which way to turn. The system seems to be working OK but every little glitch I run into I wonder if it`s connected to this cursed sucatreg thing : ).
Any body got any suggestions? This unit really zips along compared to my 336MHZ CPU.

Man...you did manage to find a huge hole here..

If I understand correctly, what happens is one INF is used copy files to their respective directory's ...then after reboot, another INF is called to do the actual installation, but Windows 98 cannot find the catalogue file placed by the first INF file.... the bombshell is this quote from MS$ website ...

" No known resolution in Windows 98. "

Here is a link to the knowledge base article ..

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;232893

I sent you an email ...let me know...

Hi Moore, sounds like you have the chipset drivers installed from your old motherboard.
    Try this:
    Download the chipset drivers here
    http://www.epox.com/USA/product.asp?ID=EP-8K7A
They should also contain the Miniport drivers that you are looking for.

Remove the current drivers. I do not have experience removing AMD chipset drivers, so check in Add/remove progams or you may have to run the the original drivers installation program and choose "remove" or "uninstall ". Reboot (it should tell you to reboot when it is finished).
When Windows starts it may run the Add New Hardware wizard ( "Windows has found new hardware... "). Click Cancel.
When you get into Windows run the new chipset drivers installation program that you downloaded.

    Jake-- Matt

    Jake,
I haven`t received your E Mail. I read the knowledge base article. I understood part of it! Where it said " no known resolution "!
I`ve downloaded the Chipset drivers from the site Matt gave me.
    Matt,
From reading the release notes with that chipset drivers download it appears there`s an uninstall included. I`m going to go try it.
    Here`s to a dark screen!
    Thanks to all.

    Awwww!
Got it downloaded and installed. No apparent change. I`m going to have to leave it for now.---- You don`t suppose it`ll heal up if I let it rest for a while ? : )
What do I really care if I leave everything as is? What function(s) do I lose without the PCI Bridge Managemnt Bus?
    Thanks for all the assistance!
