    Hi all and thanks.

How can I uninstall IE6 so I can install 5.5? I'm setting up 98se to be used offline to do my music, pictures, etc. Some of the best software I have tho will not work with IE6 so I have to use 5.5. Not a problem for me tho cause 98 wont be on the internet. XP Home does that quite well.

I tried to use the reinstall previous version of IE but 6 is the only version that was installed on 98se. So I need to delete 6 and install 5.5. All help appreciated and have a very merry christmas.

Hi dopey, What software runs OK on IE 5.5 but not 6.0 ?
Have you tried re-installing this SW with IE 6.0 installed instead of trying to go back to IE 5.5 - which is usually impossible anyway ?
    regards

    Hi guys.

Actually I had this computer built for me and it came preinstalled with 98se and xp home. I use xp for the internet and 98se for non internet use. IE6 is preinstalled on both os's. The software in question is old audio burning software that is easy to use and frankly I'm well sastified with its results. Only problem is that it wont work with IE6...says so when installing.

I could format and reinstall 98fe to solve the problem but the simpliest way is to replace IE if possible. Thanks

As I said, I do not think you will be able to easily replace IE 6.0 with 5.5
What is the name and version of the Audio Burning software you mention,
that appears not to work when you have IE 6.0 installed ?
    regards

Merlin...Photosuite 5.0...I thought it was audio but its video/photo software. Made way back in the days of 98fe. Wont work with IE6 because IE6 wasn't thought of back then...:)

Well I tried to replace IE but problems did occur...Getting a Windows Protection Error when i try to restore. Run ms backup...same problem.

Got the choice screen during boot up...normal mode, safe mode, etc....I chose the step by step option....went well until i oked the mouse driver...thats when the error occurs....any ideas?

I took the msmouse.vxd from xp and copied it to 98 but made no difference.
    Thanks

EDIT: Forgot about the scanreg /restore function. That got me restored.

Why not uninstall PhotoSuite rather than try to go back to IE 5.5 from 6.0 -
it really is impossible without a reformat, even 98Lite is doubtful.
As a replacement for your picture editing I can recommend the free :
    PhotoFiltre
For movie editing we will have to look for something else if you really need
    to do this,
    regards

    dopey,
Are you sure this is PhotoSuite v5.0, that your having problems with?

Reason I ask the Specs for this version listed here:
Basic specs for PhotoSuite 5.0 Platinum
    Compatibility-- PC
    Distribution media-- CD-ROM
Min operating system-- Microsoft Windows XP, Microsoft Windows 2000, Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition, Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition
    Min processor type-- 500 MHz

I believe you'll find I.E 6.0 is installed on some of these O/S
I've been using Photo Suite for several years and currently have it installed on my Win XP Machine and my Win 98SE, so if you would Recheck and please advise.

Surprise, surprise ! 45 minutes ago I had IE 6.0 installed, now I am back to
the much faster and compact version 5.0.
I used 98Lite 4.7 to make IE removeable and uninstalled it with the Control Panel and Add/Remove applet. Then found a copy of IE 5.0 full install on
    my Office 2000 CD.
Very few minor problems after install.
Wish me luck with my new, snappy browser :)
    regards
PS Backed up HDDC beforehand as safety measure.

    merlin, Very Interesting approach.
I checked up on the features of 98lite v4.7 and I guess it's of no help for "dopey" since he's running XP Home, but it's a great piece of information for those still running all versions of 98/ME and at a cost of only $25,00 list.

Have you been able to come across anything similar for XP Users??

It seems to me we may be going off on a tangent here with respect to the original problem.
    Merlin asked:
    Dopey responded:
I've had Photo Suite Software installed on win95, win98, 98SE, ME, up thru and including being installed on my WinXP with I.E.6.

I would like to know if in fact this is PhotoSuite Software. So, I would sure appreciate dopey confirming this, before going any further.

Hi all, Off target or not re IE remove, 98Lite 4.7 no good here.
No JAVA and Office 2000 crippled and other bits and pieces needed patching.
Only found out today - so back to yesterday's dump and IE 6 :D

    Hi guys,

Yep, PhotoSuite 5.0...when I try installing I get the error message saying that the program is incapatible with IE6 and I need to revert back to an earlier version. I'm just wondering if this is a different version than what irdreed is talking about. This software came bundled with the first computer i bought back in mid 98 with 98FE. IE5.0 was the IE of that time. 98SE was not available at that time or had just released but I have FE.

Now I have SE with IE6 pre-installed. This software will not work with IE6. I could format and install 98FE and use the program but I was hoping replacing IE wouldn't be so difficult. Seems I'm wrong again.

Some of these older programs work better than some of the newer ones. Thats why I'm keeping 98 around. I have 98SE and XP Home on this computer. 98FE is backed up on disk and not installed.

But thats not my only problem. I have some NTI software that won't work because it can't associate with the dvd/cd rom installed on this computer. (When it rains, it pours). Guess I'm gonna have to pull out the outdated computer to run these outdated softwares. Either that or update the software. Anyway, no need to replace IE now. But thanks for all info and comments. Merlin -- thanks, I'm gonna look into your replacement suggestion.

    Thanks guys.

    dopey,
    Very interesting scenario.
Just to let you know, I do have PhotoSuite5.0 on my Wife's PC with WIN 98SE installed on it, & with I.E. v6.0.2800.1106.

What has me confused now though is: What does IE.6 have to do with the installation of any type of Photo Editing Software?

It would seem to me to be the property of the O/S to make that determination.

IF anybody else has anything enlightening to add to this problem it would sure be appreciated.
