Hi, I wanted to post this in the "Outlook Express" forum, but I didn't know where to click to post it. At "New Posts" it took me to a different forum, and only when I clicked on an individual post did I see "Reply "...Please someone tell me? I'm dumb!) Thanks. Here's my problem:

I have Win98se, IE 6.0, OE 6.0, and a Dell computer. Someone please help?

My Outlook Express has been receiving hundreds of the same messages over and over again at the same time - like an avalanche - and Norton Anti-Virus pops up with a caught infected file also over and over the same infected files, every 2 minutes or so!!! Today the NAV's "catch" has been happening every 5 seconds or less! I'm hardly able to finish writing this post...

For the past 2 or 3 weeks I used to delete them from both, the Inbox AND the Deletebox hoping to kill the infection once and for all...but it didn't help...I can't take it anymore as it's impossible to do any work.

I've also been using the latest updates of spybotS&D; Lavasoft Ad-Aware (though the new version is no good and they ignored my report); CW Shredder; SpywareBlaster; ie-Spyad.exe (for whatever!). I also installed HijackThis...but am afraid to delete a system file by mistake so haven't scanned yet....I know these are not for viruses, but for other intruders...

I searched for a similar problem at BBS by hand, before I decided to post this, as I was at a loss to put this problem into 3 or 4 words in the search window, and didn't find any.

Thanks ever so much for any help on this weird thing? Adela

P.S. I noticed that ski123, in his answer to Bruce Couslon here: http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=38331&highlight=outlook+express+forum mentioned "If you are still getting the error, try doing an Internet Explorer / Outlook Express repair. ". While this is not related to my problem, I'd like to know where to find this tool. Also, what does "(Viruses that are spread by e-mail use C++)" mean? Thank you!

    Try this ....

    In OE go .....

Tools > Accounts - highlight your mail account > Properties.

In the Properties dialogue box click on the Advanced tab ....

Under 'Delivery' the check box 'Leave a copy of messages on server' should be unchecked. Is it?

It's possible that the problem lies with your ISP.
seems you succeeded, unless one of the other mods moved it here. In any forum look for the New Thread button - top left/btm left of the list of threads, hit this and start a new thread.

Trying to do too many things at once and hit the Submit button before I had finished :)
Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs - IE > Remove and in the dialogue box which appears select the Repair Option.
    C++ is a programming language.
Make sure that you have saved HijackThis to a folder on your hard drive - not the Desktop. Check that it is v 1.99 - the latest. Close all browser windows, run HijackThis.exe and select 'Do a System Scan and Save a Logfile'. Fix nothing yourself. Post the log here and we will move this thread to the Spyware & Virus Removal forum. One of the team will look at it and advise.

Great link to security, spayware, etc.

    Dear Steve R Jones:

Thanks so much for the important link you gave me for security, spayware, etc.!!! It's long, it's difficult (to me) to grasp everything, and it's thorough and most revealing. I recognized some of my hijackers, popups, etc.

I know my present problem is most probably directly related to these blessed intruders. I hope I can do what it takes to get rid of them. I'm keeping the link you gave me so I can try to do some of the things recommended as I'm eager to kill them all!

As to the 18 messages you say you received...it could be simple spam whereas the hundreds that constantly roll down my OE email inbox for the last 15 or more days., while also spam...is a major disaster!)

Thanks again for the link!!!! Adela

    Dear Peter C:

<<Tools > Accounts - highlight your mail account > Properties. In the Properties dialogue box click on the Advanced tab ....Under 'Delivery' the check box 'Leave a copy of messages on server' should be unchecked. Is it?>

Yes, it is! I now will have to check, as you suggested, with my server, although I called them first of all about this...but they said it's OE's problem...

<<...wanted to post this in the "Outlook Express" forum...>> Yes, a moderator moved it for me. I put it in "test" when I couldn't find this one.

<<Internet Explorer / Outlook Express repair >> Thanks a lot for explaining this. I kept it for any future need. And also for explaining what C++ is.

<<Make sure that you have saved HijackThis to a folder on your hard drive - not the Desktop.>>

Oh thanks so much, Peter, I'll update HijackThis.exe, do a System Scan, Save a Logfile, and post here for analysis. Question: when I downloaded it I put it on my desktop because it's easier to find quickly. Should I re-download and save to a folder in the hard drive before I scan? Does "saving to a folder on the hard drive" mean saving it in MSWord? Please forgive my ignorance...As soon as I know this, I'll get started.

Thank you so much again, Peter, for your help! Adela

Internet Explorer / Outlook Express repair

    Hello again Peter:

<<Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs - IE > Remove and in the dialogue box which appears select the Repair Option.>>

I just did this but when clicking on "remove" I didn't get the "repair" but got this message:

"This program uninstalls Q889293 and restores your previous configuration. Do you want to uninstall Q889293? "

What do you think I did wrong? Thanks very much! Adela

    Re. HijackThis .....

Open Windows Explorer > Highlight the C: drive in the Left hand pane - or My Documents - or any other folder into which you would like to put HijackThis. Then go File > New > Folder. A folder named 'New Folder' will appear in your chosen location. While it is highlighted rename it to 'HijackThis' - if it is not highlighted right click on the New Folder and select Rename. Move hijackthis.exe to this folder from the desktop - or download a fresh copy and save it there.

Hijackthis.exe is an executable file and has nothing to do with Word. Files can be stored on your hard drive in a multiplicity of formats, some of which are generic such as *.exe which as I said is an executable file, one which runs a program and others are program specific like *.doc for Word documents, *.xls for Excel spreadsheets and so on.

After scanning the HijackThis log will be saved in Notepad as a *.txt (text) file.

    Re. IE

I suspect you clicked on a hotfix (update) for IE rather than Microsoft Internet Explorer - I don't have a PC running Win 98 to hand right now so I can't be more precise on the wording.

Not really related to computers, but one day I recieved 5 envelopes that were all American Express "You have been pre-approved!" ads/sogn ups. Maybe they're trying to crowd all other mail out of my mailbox? :p

Hi Dave, but I used to have 18 (and more) identical emails sent to me ON EACH DIFFERENT MESSAGE all at the same time, and a repeat performance many times during the day and night! Impossible to be sent by a person, especially from my list whom I know almost everyone. There's no question it was yet another typically weird act by the computer/internet whatever. I never knew what triggered it and never knew what stopped it...) Adela
