My Vaio computer stared crashing regularly after I installed service pack 2 from microsoft download site. I have window 2000 pro. I assumed the right thing to do was uninstall SP2 which I did but the crash problem persisted especially with IE6 and Outlook. At this point, I thought it would be a good idea to do a repair.

Using the Windows 2000 install disk, I booted OK and the installer did it's thing installing componensts and devices without problem except when it gets to the final screen "Performing final tasks ", it stops dead cold on "registers components" after flashing a few times. I've tried the install five times and the installer stops at exactly the same place each time. The trouble is the installer has not completed the install so now I can't start the computer without the boot disk...and once booted, it automaticaly starts the install over again.
Any suggestions where to go from here without a full recovery....which I wouldn't mind doing but I have some files I'd like to save before taking that step.

    Thanks

    Ossa,

I'm currently trying that now and startup starts again. It's running now. Well see if it gets past the "register components" in the final screen.

I'd replace the video card with a L-cheapo card and try again as video drivers are 90% of most common problems.

If U have video on UR mobo then disable it and install (again) a cheap card and give it a go.......
