    What do I need to change so that when I click on a link within an email message it takes me to the site in the Firefox browser? When I click a link now, nothing happens and it's driving me nuts trying to figure out why this is like this!

    Heeeeeelllp!

    I don't know why nothing would happen, because the link should open in the default browser. But, you should make FF your default browser. If things work ok, all links should now open in Firefox.

    Check your Folder Options>File Types and scroll to URL:Hypertext Transfer Protocol.

    Click on advanced and click on open and edit. D:\PROGRA~1\FIREFOX\FIREFOX.EXE -url "%1" should be in the "application used to perform action" box.

    Mine is D\:. Yours would be on C:\ instead if your Firefox is installed on C:.

    Clicking URL in email still takes me to Netscape browser

    My Folder Options>File Types looks exactly as Bmoore showed in his note, but links are still being opened with the Netscape 7.2 browser when I click on a URL link in an email. FF is my default browser, but I haven't switched from Netscape mail to Thunderbird yet (but that shouldn't make any difference).

    Would appreciate your help!

    You have to look at two settings. One is in Netscape prefs| Navigator.
    If the upper right button is grayed out, NS is default. If not, and you have selected FF in Options|General|Default browser, then Check now, should tell you that it is default.
    As for mail, if Netscape mail is default, it means only that if you have to e-mail withinn a form or link, you will open Netscape, but if you click on a link in Netscape Mail, you should be able to open it in FF.

    I had a similar glitch recently (in Windows XP) where FF was checked as my default browser in FF's Tools|Options|General|Default browser but links in my e-mail messages would open IE.

    I found the fix in Start - Set Program Access and Defaults - Custom. If you click on the "double down" arrow to the right of the "Custom" item, you can make appropriate settings there.

    Thanks. I had done such thing, but I still do not understand what's going on. For instance Thunderbird is my default mail client, but I did not have access to it allowed. It is not the case at all.

    Frustrating ! ! ! Doesn't work for me at all.
    In 'Program access etc. . . ' > Custom I set Mozilla Firefox as default, untick the 'Allow access to this program' for IE; click OK.
    I get the window 'Setting Mozilla firefox as default application' but the progress bar does not move.
    Try a link from the e-mail program - IE opens.
    In the Custom set-up it always reverts to the 'Use my current browser' setting with Mozilla Firefox deselected
    Re-booting after any change makes no difference. I presume that there is a registry setting that needs to be changed to get Firefox to be the default browser for these links, and apparently the 'Set program access and defaults' is not too effective.

    Roger :confused:

    I have pretty much the same settings as you do, and I have a check mark in FF Options|General|Default browser. And each link in very diverse e-mails opened Firefox1.0.
    I know that some websites are very much Microsoft oriented, but I had e-mail from Microsoft tech support, and another from Napster.com, and they opened FF. I tried several, in addition, and they opened FF.
    I don't understand why it opens IE.

    I have seen this somewhere. Try Start>Run> regsvr32 urlmon.dll >OK and OK.

    Maybe it got unregistered somehow.

    Perhaps there is a memory-resident program that is somehow getting in the way. I can't help thinking Microsoft doesn't want you to change browsers. ;)

    I'm not handy with the registry so I won't make any suggestions about editing it. However, since I'm a certified Tinkerer, I can suggest trying the following when your patience is back up.

    ========
    One Suggestion:
    Reboot in safe-mode (by tapping your F8 key while the machine boots until the screen comes up allowing you to choose safe-mode). Then make the settings in Start - Set Program Access and Defaults. Perhaps then after booting back into normal mode, the change will stick.

    ========
    Another Suggestion:
    1. Try uninstalling FF via Add/Remove Programs and rebooting (giving a chance for your new registry settings to get recognized by Windows). I don't know if it matters to uninstall in normal or safe mode. I would probably try uninstalling FF in normal mode.

    2. Then look at your Start - Set Program Access and Defaults and take notes of how your options have changed in both the "Non-Microsoft" and "Custom" areas after Firefox is no longer available to Windows. (Might be helpful.)

    3. Then install FF again. Maybe it will ask you if you want to make it your default browser on install. After install is complete, go back into Start - Set Program Access and Defaults and look at both the "Non-Microsoft" and "Custom" and compare to your previous observations.

    ========

    When I had similar problem last week, there was a time where, instead of a radio button item for the default browser setting, there was a small drop down-menu where I selected Firefox. I just can't remember exactly when it occured and what conditions produced it. (I didn't take notes.)

    If none of these suggestions work, maybe it's best to try to take a break from clicking on those email links for a few days before the frustration level gets in the way. Sometimes, ideas spring to mind at the strangest times.

    I hope for the best for you. Please let us know what happens.
