I've downloaded and removed my old driver and installed a new one (got both from the Canon site.)

Computer can't find the scanner... Is there any way to get my scanner, a Canoscan 656U, to work without the CD I've lost or misplaced?

    Thanks-

    A few questions ....

    Which OS are you running?

    SCSI or USB scanner?

Anything showing in Device Manager? Guess not, but if there is and you are on XP - Rollback Driver.

I'm sorry about the original post being so vague...

This is a new computer (dell 9200) with xp and usb 2.0.

The driver from canon does not work. The device mgr. wizard cannot find software and says to use the CD, which I no longer have.

I guess I'm going to have to pony up $113 to Amazon for a new Lide 80.

Thanks for the help... I'm not going to buy until tomorrow, 12/22, so if anyone can think of a way to get my 656 working... I hardly use a scanner but want to have one if needed.

    Happy Holidays!!

Hi Toroguns: Maybe I'm too late with this post, but when you open the new hardware wizard to install the scanner, and it asks for the cd, you can choose the location of the downloaded driver files and fish around in there for whatever drivers Windows is looking for.

    Martin-

No, you were not too late!!

It took me over a half hour of searching all through the C:temp files this morning and then I just did a bunch of 'cut and paste' into the wizard until the right one was found.

I'm still at a loss as to why it couldn't find it on it's own...

You just saved me $114 at Amazon for a new scanner!

Thanks for the tips from all of you, I really appreciated them.

    Paul

Hey Paul, Congratulations, you got it working! Glad we could be of help.

Any time you have downloaded software and Windows can't find the drivers, don't forget this technique. Believe me, I know how frustrating the fishing for drivers can get, but they are usually there, just got to point Windows in the right direction. Usually, at least on this machine, you do not have to cut and paste, if you open the driver file for the required driver, Windows will recognize it and then you just click the OK.

Come back to the board even when you don't have a problem, read through the posts, you will gain a wealth of knowledge, and maybe you can help somebody else.

Also, I know it is the Christmas Season, but if you can afford it, spend some of that $113 you saved and become a contributing member. Help support this board so it will be here to help us when we need it. Spend the $20.00 and get $1,000,000.00 worth of help.

I don't work here, just so grateful for all the help I have gotten here and the selfless dedication of the members I became a contributing member and encourage everybody to pony up.

Great Paul: Welcome as a contributing member! :D

    You will never regret it.

P.S. That fish you see in my avatar is a Rainbow Trout, weight approx 10 lbs, raised in my little home pond in the back yard. The Trout in there are over two years old now and well over the weight of this one. I feed them daily, they eat a 50 pound bag of trout food every two weeks. About 50 of them left out of 100, we ate the others. Have a life expectancy of 7 years, can't imagine how big they might get in another 5 years if we don't eat them all first. Pond gets ice, but moving water and has yet to freeze over completely. Many years ago I spent some time fishing on lake Eire with my father, a really pleasant memory.
