    hi,
every now and then when I connect to the internet, all the programs that are running work fine. But if I try and open a new program, nothing happens. Then 10 minutes later all the programs I try to open suddenly all open.
I have no idea what makes them so slow to open because it only happens when I am on the internet, and only happens sometimes.

here is a list of stuff on task manager:

    taskmgr
    winamp
    firefox
    E_SICN03
    WinMX
    msnmsgr
    ctfmon
    ALUNOTIFY
    jusched
    ccApp
    rundll32
    SMax4PNP
    kpf4gui
    explorer
    SMAgent
    nvsvc32
    NAVAPSVC
    MDM
    kpf4ss
    CDANTSRV
    CCEVTMGR
    spoolsv
    svchost (x5)
    lsass
    services
    winlogon
    csrss
    smss
    alg
    kpf4gui
    svchost
    svchost
    System
    System Idle Process

Sometimes aka Intermittent problems are hard to solve. You could spend days trying different things and then not know for days if they work or not.

Rebooting on the "sometimes" days would be worth trying. Windows has a million things to do on boot up. Sometimes it skips a few and causes problems.

    Hello got_no_life

If Steve's suggestion doesn't do it, it might be a software conflict. You will have to do a series of selective disabling of software to find the culprit.

The next time this happens, make a list of what's running and run them thru these sites to find out what they are:

    http://www.answersthatwork.com/Tasklist_pages/tasklist.htm

    http://www.liutilities.com/products/wintaskspro/processlibrary/system/

    http://www.windowsstartup.com/wso/search.php

    http://www.windowsstartup.com/wso/search.php

    http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php

BTW, another way to get a task manager list that seperates out svchost.exe's:

Open a cmd box: start > run > type cmd > ok and type:
    tasklist /svc > c:\tasklist.txt

Will show you, among other things, exactly what is running in each instance of svchost. It will create a .txt file tasklist.txt on the HD.

tasklist.exe is only on XP-pro, so if running Home you'll need to download it along with the instuctions from here:

    hi,
I still don't seem to be getting anywhere and it is still annoying me every single time i go on the internet. The strange thing is, one application will open and that is Windows Picture and Fax Viewer. I have no idea why that would open but not other programs?
I hope i can fix this problem although it is okay just to open all the programs I might use before I connect. :(

Check your AV program to see if it's perhaps scanning your drive which may sap all of your processor. Also check any possible programs that may be accessing the Internet for updates such as Windows Auto Updater.

As a quick test, run msconfig and open the Startup Tab and press the Disable All button. Reboot and check for effect.

May also be a virus or malware - check with latest signatures.

Have you looked at the Processor activity level in Task manager when this problem is present?

    hey.

thanks for those possible solutions, i will try them soon.
I can't, although see what is taking up the processor while the problem is happening, because the Task-Manager won't open as well!

I CAN open the console while this is happening though, so is there a command for XP HOME to view a tasklist from the console?

    Hello got_no_life,

    Someone had a similiar problem

    http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=38157&highlight=Task+Manager

They never did post back, but there are suggestions about resolving the TM problem and a substitute for it.

    Regards - Charles
