It was fairly easy to change the drive icons in Win95, but does anyone know how to do this in XP?

From WDC.com (western digital) You can modify the following...

Create a folder named AUTORUN directly on the root of the drive (example E:\AUTORUN)
Extract or move the WDLOGO.ICO into the E:\AUTORUN folder.
Extract or move the AUTORUN.INF file into the root of the drive (Example E:\AUTORUN.INF)
Reboot the computer, or in the case of an external drive, "safely remove" the hard drive and then reboot the computer. Plug the drive back in.
The Icon should now be displayed in "explorer" or "My Computer "

If i may elaborate on Steve's posting since he is offline right now..

You too can use a feature designed for autoplaying CDs and allowing manufacturers to customize the display icon.

This isnt 'easy', but it works. First, locate the ICO file for the pretty icon you want to use for each drive.

    FOR CD DRIVES
Place these files into the root of the CD.
Then, create a new text file with the following contents

    Code:
    [autorun]
    icon=thefilename.ico
Save this file, also in the root of the CD, and rename it to AUTORUN.INF
The above procedure will not work for anything but CDs.

    For Hard Drives

    1) open regedit.exe
    2) Navigate the tree to here HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer
    3) Add a subkey named DriveIcons
    4) Add a subkey to that named X (X being the drive letter you are changing)
    5) Add a subkey to that named DefaultIcon
    6) Edit the (default) value data to point to your ICO file (ex: c:\icons\foo.ico)

See attached screenshot for making my E drive have a cool icon

Hey, I really appreciate your reply. The approach you outline for CDs is the one I used for all drives in Win95. I will give the other procedure you present for my drives. Thanks again.

Ben - I don't know if you will get this or not, but my question is this: you talk about setting the icons for the CD drives differently from the hard drives and say the method will work only for the CD drives. But the method you cite for hard drives will work for the CD drives won't it ?
