Hello there. I was having some troubles with my XP machine, and I had to re-do the SP2 installation. Now everything works, except one thing:

I am unable to create a pagefile!

I have two HD's. I tried System-managed, and I tried specifying its size manually and I tried one or both drives.. It accepts my new settings (in My Computer -> Properties -> Advanced -> Virtual memory), and asks me to reboot. I reboot and it tells me that my system does not have a pagefile again!

I did scandisk and NDD on both drives, and I defragged the C: drive.

So, when I set the pagefile manually, it appears to accept it, but when the machine reboots, the settings are still there, but the pagefile.sys's are nowhere to be found!

    Help!

    Welcome to the Windows BBS!

The pagefile.sys is a HIDDEN file. You'll not see it unless you're configured to show all files.

Edit: I just noticed you are Experienced so perhaps that advice is wasted. :D

Correct. I have both 'reveal all files' selected and I used
attrib C:\* to see all the files from the command line.

I think at some point I also manually created a pagefile
    with

    copy con C:\pagefile.sys
    ^Z

however Windows quickly deleted my blank pagefile at next reboot :)

But thanks for your feedback! -t

    Followup and thanks

I just wanted to thank everyone for their assistance with my windoze XP PRO problem.

I followed all the advice given here to a tee but was unable to restore my swapfile, oops paging file.

So I just inserted the Windows CD and installed a clean copy at C:\WIN whereas the old one was at C:\WINDOWS.

I recommend this to everyone - it does not delete My Documents, nor anything under Program Files. Tho, you have to reinstall SOME of the programs you have there.. some just work, some just ask for re-registration, no big deal.

I also noticed how FAST the machine runs without Norton 2004!

Afterwards, I installed SP2, latest fixes, ran XP Anti Spy, and installed norton Systemworks and AV. Oh yes and Emule of course :D

Took maybe 2-3 hours altogether.. happy camper now - with a pagefile!

    regards,
    -turgut

    Thanks for the feedback turgut!

I'm sorry we weren't able to do it any easier but sometimes it's not worth the time and effort. Since the parallel install isn't all that disruptive, if a person has the drive space, it's often the easy way out. Some of these problems are so complex and obscure that they defy repair.

    Best regards.

Thanks,.. I just wish that Windows was more Linux-like, where every problem gets logged somewhere, usually /var/log/messages!
