I had to install the Net Framework to use some software I wanted to keep. The only change I noticed to my Welcome Screen is that I have to click on my name before I can type my password (my cursor used to be sitting there in the little box, blinking ready to go!) I could disable/get rid of the welcome screen entirely, but I don't want to do that (I use the PW for a reason) Since I don't use the .Net stuff for anything but that software, I haven't paid much attention to it. After I got the update, I did have to (re)disable a bunch of services that were unnecessary on a stand-alone one-user computer, though! :D

    O.k. the saga continues.

Information to add: I believe I have SP1. The times I've booted to safe mode I noticed a "SP1" across the top of the screen. Also, I removed the .NET software sometime ago, if this makes a difference.

Both programs Goddez1 provided do NOT put "Administrator" on my welcome screen. They do however put "David" on my welcome screen. I had somehow previously removed this so that when I boot up it will just roll right past the welcome screen. It would display the wellcome screen briefly (no choices) but then go to my desktop. Now I'm required to click "David" but still no administrator choice.

I'll try the newer version and of TweakUI and see what happens.

I still can not get the catroot2 change to work.

    Here is what I'm doing.
    "Start "
    "Programs "
    "Accessories "
    "Command Prompt "
    "net stop crypsvc "
    "ren c:\windows\system32\catroot2 oldcatroot2" <<<< FAILS!
    "net start crypsvc "

    I have tried:
    cd\
    cd c:\windows\system32\
    ren catroot2 oldcatroot2

    also,

    "ren c:\window\system32\catroot2 c:\windows\system32\oldcatroot2 "

And some others I can't think of.

    What am I doing wrong.

I will try doing it from the "safe mode comand prompt" but the KB article says nothing about this being necessary. It just says be logged on as an administrator.

Again, using Windows Explorer, I do indeed have a catroot2 folder in C:\windows\system32\.

Using the dos command dir/p I DO NOT have any DIRs, just some files.

Using the dos command dir /A:H. I do have a DIR titled "catroot2 ".

    **************

    sfc /scannow:

This doesn't work either. There is NO option to "browse" when you type this in DOS. It wants the CD. It doesn't give you the option to browse to a folder. Is there anyway to run this so it will point to the I386 directory? And yes I am running on an IBM OEM.

I also tried deleting the V4 folder and recreating it.

I'm still not convinced that Windows is recognizing me as an Administrator even though it says I am. ALL of these "things to try" are dependent upon the fact that I'm an Admnistrator. I could be just spinning my wheels.

    ******************

Finally, I ordered the SP2 disk from windows. My thinking is this.

I believe this disk will essentially do what I'm trying to do through Windows Update anyways; bring my machine current on all critical updates. I was hoping it might even "correct" my current problem and allow me to use "Windows Update" in the future.

    Is this just crazy thinking?

Forget the command line rename operation, just right click the catroot2 folder you see in Windows Explorer and choose delete. That will send it to the Recycle Bin. Windows update will recreate it as needed.

This is completely safe and will perform the same function as renaming the folder without all the confusion you have been going through. You can learn the command line syntax later if you're still interested.

Run the sfc /scannow command from the Start > Run tool and you'll have full functionality to browse when need be.

Although you can edit the Registry to accomplish the logon without the Welcome screen, you can do it easier with TweakUi.

Run TweakUi and click the Logon > Autologon > and tag the box presented.

    crockett,
If those suggestions don't work, all I can think is that you aren't administrator. When starting safe mode, if your name appears try changing it to administrator, and if successful and you haven't arranged for a passward for same, just hit enter.
